Very Happy Hi all, I'm considering getting a nice lightweight english gun in 16ga. I was wondering if any of you have had any experience with this chambering for wild birds (pheasants and prairie grouse).

Does the 1 oz load work well?

Your thoughts please.

All the best and thanks!!

Greg

gjw: I can't speak about wild birds as I don't get a chance to hunt them (other than Gambels quail) where I live. However, I think the 1 oz. 16ga. load is the optimum hunting load for the gauge. And, it doesn't matter if it comes out of a 2 1/2" load or a 2 3/4" load.

I recently picked up a J. Needham 16ga. 2 1/2" game gun and not 2 hours ago reloaded up a box of 1 oz. of nickle plated shot using Longshot powder. 1200 fps., 6,800 psi. I've been having a hoot with this gun and reloading the 2 1/2" chambering!

1 oz at 1200 fps will kill anything that 1 1/8-1 1/4 oz will at the same speed. Just put the pattern where the bird is. Its that simple.

I agree, 1200 fps is 1200 fps but , all else being equal, you may want to look at a double with a little tighter chokes than your using with 1 1/4 oz loads to keep the pattern density equal to what you have with 1 1/4 oz loads.

One ounce of hard shot will smoke them as well as a 2 3/4" load with comparable ballistics.

I just bought an english 16 2.5" gun. I wondered the same thing. I have hunted with it 4 times and have killed 9 wild pheasants with 1 oz. loads. Buy the gun and don't look back.

I have been shooting a -1/2" chambered Harkom 16 for a number of years. I egularly kill wild chukars, ruffed and blue grouse, etc. using 1 oz. laods and 7/8 oz. loads. Velocity is about 1200 fps, and chokes are IC and Full. Stones birds at 40 yards with either load.
