Well, I finally successfully loaded a pic. This pic was back in October and now that I'm home for Christmas, a buddy came over to show me how to load these things. I was shooting Bismuth BBs in reloads and it really worked well!

Hey guys,
The info I left with the pic seemed short, but I was in a hurry to go pheasant hunting! We didn't put any birds in the bag, but just surviving two hours in the cattails and blizzard is a victory in my book! (West Central Minnesota)
Fido is better known to me as Windy and she's 3.5 yrs old. She's a bird machine and I've trained her up to about a "Senior Hunter" level by AKC standards. We've only tried one hunt test, but I've used her successfully on Ducks, Geese, Huns, Pheasants, Sharpies, Ruffed Grouse from Saskatchewan to the US prairies to the Great Lakes Forests.
The goose hunt that day was pretty good. One close shot, and the other was a bit of a stretch, but it was a clean kill and I was pretty darn impressed. That was in the Western UP where I reside.
Merry Christmas!

Nice shooting. I've wondered how successful one can be using a 16 on geese. I've never shot geese, and people talk about 12 or 10.
What are people's experience with a 16 ga. on geese in general?
Great looking dog. I think Labs are great dogs. They tend to have such style. |

It don't get no better than that - - nice dog, vintage 16ga gun, and the day's harvest. |

I regards to goose hunting in general, my dad has had great success with Kent Tungsten Matrix #5. He has made some very nice "long" shots, and when they decoy right to the pocket, it's really a done deal.

I took a couple of geese this year is SD with 16ga Tungsten Matrix shells in my Simson. While we were duck hunting, several different times a lone goose would come in to take a look at our spread. Both geese were taken with #6's at about 20-30yds. They dropped like they were hit by lightning. |

16's are fine for geese if you pick your shots. There is a 12 and a 16 in the pic. My son was shooting the 12.

I've posted this pic before - Nov 06, my Merkel 16 and 7 geese, 2 ducks - if I remember correctly it took 12 shots. TM 5's and bismuth 2's. 16 ga. guns do kill geese quite well if the hunter does his part.

hey guys,
long time no post. No internet at our new place, too far in the hills.
Anyhoo, shot a nice goose back in november w/ my Jap. Browning Sweet 16, IC choke w/ 15/16 of #2 steel from federal. Moments later I dropped a nice mallard from straight over head with one nice "per-chunck" of the A-5. I've tried every other reasonable gauge & load combo over the last few years and with the first day of using my 16 I'm sold for life. Recoil was non-existant , killed cleaner than the old heavy loaded 3" 12's and carries like a dream. I used a 16 for everything ( including deer ) but waterfowl, but no longer. Had a great rest of the season with that 16 and stell # 2's.
