I just saw these 2 choke abbreviations:

F/XF

I assume the F is full, but what would the XF be?

Well... another thread suggests this is Full, and ?extrafull?

I've never seen an extra full on a SxS. How do you think this 16 ga. gun with 28" barrels was used?

How old is the gun? Do you know if it is a local Southern California gun? The reason I ask is that from the turn of the last Century until the 1940s and 50s 16 gauge guns were very popular with duck hunters along the salt marshes of the Southern coast. I remember as a little kid my Grandfather taking me to the Back Bay south of Newport Beach fishing for sand shark and duck hunting.

It is here in Socal. As I was sitting around last night, I thought it might be a good duck gun. You've confirmed my suspicions.

My Merkel M8 SxS made for the European market in the mid-70's is choked F and XF. I've never patterend it, so I can't say how the pattern from the Full barrel compares to the pattern from the Xtra-Full barrel. I always figgerd it was made for pass shooting high-flying geese.

I can say that I have seen alot of similar Merkels with the same barrel chokes.

I have a Beretta 16ga Model GR2 that had barrels marked mod/full. The chokes mic'ed out to .023 and .038 Thou constriction. That left barrel was certainly extra Full. Did not need a duck gun so had Mike Orlen open the barrels to .007 and .012. Works better for chukar, and whatnot.

I never knew that Beretta made the GR series in 16 gauge. I never saw any but 12 and 20 gauge. Never saw a GR 16 in any of their catalogs either. Was it a special order gun or made for the European market?

It is indeed a GR-2, with a date code of 1968. It has a factory silver receiver (all other GR2's I had seen had a blued receiver). The engraving pattern is exactly like a blue GR2 my buddy has in 20 ga. This 16 ga gun has a Prince of Wales style grip, splinter fore-end and factory sling swivels fore and aft, so I suspect it was made for the Euro market, as their are no importer markings. I've only recently acquired it, so I do not know it's providence. It also has a third bite, like the earlier Silver Hawks Lightweights and the earlier Model 409, which is lacking on the later Model 424-426 (circa 1977). This is an extractor only gun, no ejectors.
