I've been eying a pretty nice Winchester Model 12 16 gauge in all original condition, except it has an after-market Simmons ventilated rib. The rib looks very nice and blends well with the rest of the gun. Can anyone share their opinions about these Simmons ventilated ribs? How desirable are they? Do they add or detract from the price of the gun? Any other comments about them?

Thanks!!

The Simmons company makes a good product no doubt.IMO they don't belong on a M12 Evil or Very Mad This is a personal matter if it looks good to to you then proceed with the purchase.

Simmons installed the factory ribs on Model 42s, and I believe some M12s (but could be wrong Rolling Eyes )

The gun is reblued as part of the rib installation, which is a big negative wrt resale value. I'd pay as much for a nice aftermarket simmons gun as I'd pay for a post-war round barrel gun of equal condition.

Simmons and Money Maker were specialists in shotgun rib installation. In the early days Winchester had Simmons and to a lesser extent Money Maker install ribs on new guns including the Model 12 Super X 3" magnum guns. It is pretty easy to distinguish an after market rib from one ordered by Winchester. the after market rib is stamped Simmons Gun Specialist on the side of the rib and the ones produced for Winchester have the Winchester proof symbol visible on the receiver and the barrel extension.
