I'm asking two questions because I've never sold a gun before. I either give them to friends or trade for something.

My brother in law was killed in an accident last week an I am helping my nephew with the contents of the gunsafe. My B-in-L owned 10 shotguns, only one 16ga., mostly 12's and mostly for trap. He had some good ones (the 16 is an L.C. Smith) but I don't shoot trap and know little about what they're worth.

What's the best place to start? Bluebook? I'd like to have some solid homework before we sell or cosign any of them.

Second question is who are reputable gun dealers in Maryland, DC area?

I'm sorry for your family's loss.

I would use the Blue Book as a starting point. Also, the online gun auctions (Gunbroker and Auction Arms) are good places for comparisons as well. Just make sure you look at what the guns are selling for, not what some semi-lucid folks think they are worth.

I can give you the names of several reputable shops in the Harrisburg, PA area if you are interested. One of whom buys collections and would probably travel to your area.

Sign up for a gunbroker account, or find someone who has one already.
That is the only way to get what they are truly worth.
If the accumulation is worth $5000, consignment or outright sale to a shop would bring you 1/2 or a little more.
Consignment you may wait months or years to sell them all off.
Post a list and conditions here and we could give some general ballpark figures.

I agree-Gunbroker is the best place to sell and get the max. for each piece. Open an account. Start with an inexpensive piece. You'll need to take good digital photos of each gun-detailed descriptions too. Work through an entire sale and payment and delivery to FFL to get the drill down. Then you can do more. A little more effort here than giving them to a shop-but a lot more money.

PS Blue Book is a decent reference for values, but I have found, depending on Demand for certain guns, prices actually paid may vary widely from those quoted.

Condolences on your loss. I have had dealings with Atlantic Guns in Rockville, MD and Albright's Gun Shop in Easton MD. Both are family owned.

Granted, you'll do better selling on one of the auction sites. Of course there are the classified sections here and at Shotgunworld.
