I was at a household auction today and a 870 wingmaster was up for bid. I got there late and could not really look over the gun but it appered to be a 1950's vintige ADL. Full choke plain barrel with the grooved fore end, I would say it was 85-90%, blueing was good a few scratches in the wood, it was used but not abusied. I was in the running up to $270 and I stopped, it was sold for $300. Let me know, did I stop to soon????
I am second guessing myself, should I have gone higher?? |

I bought one last year in great shape except for one small 1-inch light surface rust spot on the receiver. I think I paid around $340. for it and was happy with that price. Depends on what it was worth to you, but if you stopped there, it indicates that it was going beyond what you were comfortable with, so you made the correct decision. Sometimes "book value" and what you value a gun at are two different things. |

On a plain barrel model, 270 is about as far I'd go. |

The $270 bid was too high, since you hadn't looked it over. But not too bad if everything was ok.. They can be had in pawn shops for that price and less MDC |

There was a 16ga 870 in a local shop with a rib grooved into its plain barrel as seen on some of the Browning A5's, is that pretty common for those older guns?

I have never seen a solid rib 870, if that is what you are talking about. My A5 16 ga. has a solid (un-vented) rib as does my brother's Model 12. I am guessing that a solid rib could have been added after market.
I like the solid rib, it gives a good sight picture without allowing weed seeds and such getting caught in there while hunting. |

kgb,
Yes, the BDL model made in the 50's before the introduction of the vented rib had a "matt rib" plain barrel which looked like the plain barrel Sweet 16 which has a matt surface roll stamped into the top of the barrel.
I have one in both 12 and 16 gauge and there is one at the local pawn shop in 20ga.
