I just joined the LPG and noted an information sheet which indicated that a Cheddite 209 primer may be substituted for a Win 209 primer. Does it follow that a Win 209 primer may therefore be exchanged in a recipe calling for a Cheddite 209?

There have been some recent testing done that suggests that the Cheddite primer are in fact not interchagable with the Winchester 209. Tom Armbrust did a study and found a variance of up to 1000 psi (sorry I can't find the article but as I remember the Cheddite primer resulted in the higher pressure).

In my testing of low pressure loads, it's impossible to say with certainty.
In one load the cheddite primer may have a higher pressure.
But in a different load, it might be close to the same or lower.
When you switch components around, you take your chances, unless you actually get your loads tested, you will never know for sure.

It would appear from Tom's 2007 tests prove that Cheddite 209s can be substituted for Win 209s in the load he was testing. This is true with many other less than max pressure loads. But there will be variations in pressure and velocity between the loads when you switch the primer.

One should never substitute a Fed. 209 A for a Win 209.
