What is the threshold for what is considered to be a "low pressure" loading? Is it different gauge to gauge - I assume so as the 12 ga seems to have lower operating pressure than say a 20 ga in general for a give shot charge. Thanks for the help!

That is a very good question and I'm interested to see what others consider low pressure. |

In talking with Mike Orlen about a damascus double he stated they were normally tested at around 6700 to 7000 psi. Not sure were he picked up this bit of info as for the times wasn't everything rated in LUP's? But then again in my newer guns anything under 10,000 psi is low pressure. HA
Merry Christmas ya'll

LUP/Dram equivalant----old time/outdated words/stats--For my two cents anything under 6750 PSI is low pressure The transition from black to smokeless powder still gives us headaches |

Pressure is influenced by bore diameter. Larger the bore diameter, the lower the average pressure needed to get a nominal load up to the identical velocity. Of course, much depends on the powder and primer used as well. You can see this clearly with moderate burn rate powders like Unique, 7625 and Solo 1250 which can be used in loads from 10 to 28 ga. All one has to do is look at the published data. As the bore diameter tightens the pressures rise even as the payload decreases at a given velocity. |
