Steve, exactly. Who cares if the shells are 2 1/2" if they shoot as well as a 2 3/4" inch shell, and you can load them as fast as a 12 or a 20? With the Gualandi loads mentioned above, who needs a foam insert or whatever?

I can personally attest that, with skeet at least, there's not much difference in the scores between a 7/8 oz load and a 1 1/8 or 1 1/4 load, at least in the 12 gauge. My scores are the same with both loads, anyway (but I'm not a competition shooter).

Thanks again for the info, guys. I am going to 2 1/2" shells when I can, especially with my worn-out old hulls. I've been looking for an easy way to load 7/8 oz loads in my 16s for a long time. 8mmFan

I just bought the Gualandi wads that SkeetTX mentioned above. Besides cutting down hulls with a scalpel, does anyone know of anything else I have to do to load these babies? I use a Mec 600 Jr. Mark V that is set up for 2 3/4" shells. SkeetTX, you mentioned a modification to, I think, your die. Does anybody know if I also have to make a modification to the die on my Mec? Any other steps I need to be aware of?

Thanks for the info, guys. I have not been shooting my 16s as much as I'd like at the skeet range, because frankly reloading for them is too much of a pain compared to a 12 and a 20. Am very much looking forward to unlimbering the 16ga guns with these 2 1/2" shells. 8mmFan

either get the short kit from mec or cut a 1/4" piece of plywood to fit under the shell guide onthe press base. This raises up the shell for the propper crimp. You only need to put the shim inder the last 2 stations.

Thanks again for the info, guys. I received 2,000 of the Gualandi wads, and am waiting for a hull trimmer from BPI. The plan is to shoot up all of my RGL 16 ga loads and use them as my shorties. Don't have many federals to use so will try the RGL's. Am very much looking forward to this. 8mmFan

Can anyone recommend a source? I am removing the shot from short shells and want to replace with slugs.

It is not wise to empty the shot and add a slug.
The pressure curve will be different . best is to reload the hull with the approved powder for the slug combination.
See what data comes with your slugs.
