Am I crazy or did I read somewhere that this was a current practice? Have you guys ever heard of this? |

Yes Dick a number of shooters have been loading Gualandi 2025 wads in Remington SP and Game Load hulls with 7/8th ounces of shot. Makes a nice light load with no filler required. When they get Charles's 3/4 / 7/8th ounce Winchester AA look alike up and going the use of the 20 gauge wad may not be necessary. |

I thought I had read it and it made sense since the guagemates work so well. |

Low pressure group has at least 12 tested loads with 20 ga wads. |

I discovered the Federal 20S1 wad was a pretty fair alternative for subgauge loads in the GL16 hull. The shot cup would handle 7/8 to 1 ounce of shot just fine as is. The 3/4 ounce load required only one 28 ga card wad. The wad diameter was a bit smaller than ideal, but the base cup had a deep hemispherical shape that allowed it to flair out on the powder to seal it up nicely. The base also obturated nicely to seel the bore as well. I was able to dispense with this after the R16 wad became available to us three years ago.
We don't need to use these alternatives anymore. We now have two new domestically produced 16 ga wads, i.e. the Claybuster WW16AA clone for 1 to 1-1/4 ounce loads, and Nick Hammock's new 3/4 to 1 ounce wad from Downrange. Things are much better for us 16 ga reloaders than a short year ago. We finally have the bases well covered with some excellently designed wads. |
