I am loading BP supplied Fiocchi pre-primed blue hulls using BP's sporting 16 wads, 1 oz load, 16.4 grns Red Dot with mec 600 Jr.
I have set my pressure light enough so that I'm just getting a minium acceptable crimp. Problem: Alot of the hulls are bulging/failing just above the brass. I adjusted the final station to try to mininumize the crushing with little success. Any suggestions? This dosen't happen with other hull brands
Thanks, John |

Raise the final crimp station and the crimp depth on that die. |

I have raised the final crimp station (as described in my post). If I raise it any more I wont have a crimp that will stay closed.
Thanks, John |

To be honest, that is a lot of RED DOT for a one ounce load in a 16 Gauge hull. I doubt that the load is good to begin with. |

Been loading them for a while 1165 fps from bp's sixteen reload guide. |

16.4 grains of Red Dot is slightly less than Alliant's recommended weight of 17.0 grains in the Fiocchi hulls.
I'm not an expert on adjusting MEC loaders but it does sound like an adjustment problem to me or you may need to go to the longer Gualandi 1618 wad. |

I had the same problem with loading 24 grains of 800x with the sg16.
I had to take my final crimp to the max out, still got a good taper crimp on the hull. I don't remember having to do that before but that is what I had to do. Previously had my mec set up to run short hulls, I need to get a short kit so I don't have to keep adjusting

Grouser 47,
Try your cam adjustment on the final crimp station, since you have adjusted the die up this may help with the bulging. Experienced the same thing with those hulls but I had a different load.
You didn't say are they 67mm or 70mm length hulls. If you don't have the mec short kit yet get one. Comes in handy after you have cut old hulls down.
Don't be afraid to call mec and ask for advice, they're great people.
Good Luck, Charlie |

Twicebarrel,
I looked on the Alliant site, I can't find any 1 oz. loads for Fiocchi hulls .
Where did you find the data?
I have a quantity of both Red Dot and Fiocchi hulls, so I can use the data. |

dc37,
Looking through the LPG data I'm not seeing anything for red dot and 1oz loads that don't push the pressure limits. Unique looks a lot better.

Got the data from "Ballistic Products Reloading Manual" 17 grains of Red Dot = 1165 fps and 10000psi --- I backed it off slightly. I don'd have Unique but have about 50 lbs of Red dot on hand that needs to be used!
Cheers, John |

The 17 gr. BP load is also printed in older Alliant manuals, but with the Activ G28 wad, which is slightly more capacious IIRC. Birddog has the right idea; if the cam setting's too aggressive, the hulls buckle. Load fit may also be an issue; I've never tried this combo, but I only load 7/8 oz. in Fed. hulls with the SG-16 and Green dot, no fillers. |

I have some older Alliant stuff too, the most I see is 15.5 grs. of Red Dot in a Fioochi hull.
No matter it just doesn't seem like a load that is going to go correctly with the components listed. |

ALLIANT POWDER RELOADERS GUIDE 2000 Edition.
The other load listed for Fiocchi hulls uses 15.5 grains of Red Dot with a Winchester AA16wad yeilding 1,165 fps at 10,400 psi. |
