Apreciate your comments on this....
assuming the DRA 16 7/8 new wad isn't too damn far off the SG16 gualandi I always use, I am planning on using new wad in this recipe-if anyone knows why I shouldn't, say so. Thw hole deal is getting the shot to sit higher and eliminating the filler I always have to put in there.

Purple (estate or Fed) Hull
18.5 Greendot Fed primer
DRA16 7/8 wad
7/8 oz 8.5 shot

Should be OK, but I'd start lower and work up a little, or better yet, get it tested. You're making a direct component switch, and that should not be taken too lightly..

I would start with 16.6 grains of Green Dot. I bet that would work for you.
Although Lymans has a load using 20 grain of Green Dot with the 209A primer, but it's really pushing at the limits.

If you are looking for a load with a MV about 1200 fps I think SPR is right on the money.

From my observations on the wad it tends to generate higher pressures than the Gulandi I made it to work the most efficent of all wads and this means you get more bang for the buck , but you have to also use caution with the heavy loads .

I think your 18.5 GD would be ok , BUT I know the 16.5 everyone else said would be ok and a prudent place to start .

Drop down to a 21- 23 gram load and it will never be an issue , the 24 gram load has little to no advantage over the formentioned loads .

If I can make a recommendation. Go out to the Lee loadall site. They have a listing for Loads for the sixteen gauge. They are generic loads, but if you compare there loads with the loads in Lymans, out at the powder manufacturers sites they are lighter then the rest. I started looking at them when the differences in the BPI loads came up.As Charles said, if the new wad is giving higher pressures and the Lee loads are lighter then other comparable loads, I think it would give you a place to start. They don't list all of the powders, but they have a lot of choices. As I see there loads are all on the safe side compared to the rest. Just a thought. I know I have found it usefull.

(please post) w the purple hull and/or the cheddite hull.
Greendot is a friendly-to-the-shoulder powder but don't want to over push it.
After all this is just a light load, intentionally so.

I've been thru my first bag of 500 of DR16's with the following:
Cheddite 2 3/4" hull; Rio primer; 20.4 gr Green Dot; 3/4oz of #9 shot.
I can attest to it's efficacy in my 525 on claybirds, short and long.
Drop the powder a grain or two as per spr's recommendation, or load a bit less of smaller shot, I'm sure you'll be amazed at how well it works. A great target load with minimal recoil that crushes claybirds when I do my job.

Got a case of the DR16's ordered, and I'll be sending some of the above in for testing. For 7/8oz and 1oz loads I go to Unique or Herco.
