I bought some old ammo ammo at an auction today and was wanting to identify some of it.
Winchester ranger 16 (not compression)
remington peters green see-through
remington shurshot red see-through hull 16 both these hulls have the melted center crimp and I was wondering which pile to toss into or just don't bother.

I bought all the winchester compression formed i could afford but these extras were in the box along with some monarch papers, winchester papers and remington papers. I wish the box collectors hadn't been there as about 20 flats of old 12,16,and 20's were sold.

I know some or all of these shells may be obsolete but I wanted to check and see.

I am not really interested in getting rid of the Monarchs, the box looks too good on top of the safe. however i don't have a clue as to what the're worth. Would these be the shells that some are "addicted" to smelling ?hehe

The wonderful emerald green and ruby red hulls by remington are great to reload if you have the smaller size 57/157 primers. The old lyman books will give you the data. All you need now is some 571 powder or H-7 for some great reloads. Thoes old shells will kill birds with authority.

I knew I could be set straight if I came to the right source. I am one the young whippper-snappers so i don't know much about papers other than they look really neat. how many times can the papers be reloaded? what data? do they really smell good enough to chance getting hooked?? I know where a store has plenty of 57/157 primers that can be had cheap if anyone needs some. what about the ranger plastic or are they too old to bother with?

The brass on the monarchs will crack due to age, but they're still good for a few reloads. Nothing looks better with a vintage sxs than a hand rolled monarch purple hull in my opinion.

how about reloading the papers. since I have a mixed lot do they reload pretty much alike or are they as different as a win CC and a cheddite? Again what about the plastic rangers?

If the old Remington green loads are 1-1/8 ounce, they are the express versions. Look to see if they have a "Power Piston" (SP16) wad in them. If so, those shells are probably still good. Shoot a couple. if they recoil smartly, you are in business.

The Shur Shots should be one ounce loads with an R16 Power Piston wad as well. Same as above applies. If they recoil smartly, they will still do the job in the field. That is the easiest and quickest test there is.

Any mushy feeling loads have probably deteriorated past being suitable for field use. Shoot them up on a target range for practice. Game birds deserve better. Weak squib field loads are dangerous. Stuck wads in a field gun barrel on a hunt are at least, a big pain in the posterior and are a real safety hazard in any case. They often go unnoticed in a hunting situation until it is too late.

Any old American loads with nitro card or other solid felt or fiber wads may or may not be okay. Some of these old commercial loads that pre-date plastic one piece wads are now antiques and probably should be left unfired for the collector. Most are now all at least nearly 50 years old.

I have to admit, those green Remingtons look pretty cool too. When I see the red ones however, it makes me think of a 12 ga. I'm sure Mike Campbell will chime in here soon to give me what for... Razz
