I am interested in purchasing my first SXS (sweet sixteen and citori, so far). I have an opportunity to purchase a 16ga fox sterlingworth and would like some opinion from the board. I have not seen the gun in person, but according to the seller following info: Serial number is 369XXX, numbers matching, stamped on barrels "Sterlingworth Fluid Compressed Steel" on one barrel and "Made by Savage Arms Corp, Utica, NY USA" , no butt plate, no dings, no bulges, no cracks, no rust, most case color, 28: barrels, locks up tight, no rust or pitting at all, been in the family since early 40's. Asking price is $1000.

Owner recently ran some RGL's dove loads through it!

Thoughts? What else should I watch for in this gun?

Thanks!

If I had $1000 and wanted a(nother) 16 ga. Sterlingworth, I'd be asking for the seller's contact info. while telling you not to buy it. Wink

Looks like an honest gun at a good price from the pix.

The barrels are the heart of the gun so be sure they have not been honed. I would mic the bores with a good bore gauge that goes in at least 9". If the chambers are 2 3/4 I would get the barrels checked by a qualified person for barrel wall thickness. The chambers should be 2 9/16. Of course check that the gun is not shot loose. Also, look at the muzzle. The barrels, at the muzzle, should touch or be very close, if not cut. Choke length should be 3 1/2-4 inches approx., if original.

Be sure to check that the safety works. Put a couple of empties/snap caps in and pull the triggers, hard.

Next-the wood. Check closely on each cheek, where the wood meets the receiver, for cracks. This is where they frequently happen. Also, be prepared for the stock to have 2 7/8" to 3+" of DAH, unless the gun was a special order. The LOP should be around 14", if not cut, since it has no butt plate. Normally a SW would have a LOP of 14 1/8" with the butt plate.

Other than these items a standard gun check should determine the gun's condition.

Let us know what you find.

Guys,
thanks for all the advice, I learned a lot! I had a deal with the guy and he sold it from under me for 50 bucks more, I guess it wasn't meant to be! For me it wasn't a must have and was a bit opportunistic, maybe I will just save up for that Merkel Smile.

Cheers,
S
