Just wanted to let you know I have a 12ga. 870 made in '53 with a matted barrel. |

Tony,
I've got an 870 16 ga. with 2 matted barrels and its either a "D" grade or someone has tried to make it look that way. Works and shoots great but they have changed out the wood--its Remington wood with cut checkering but not from the early 50's.
Browning also had some matted barrels on A-5s, especially early higher grade guns.

The barrel was matted. No rib, but a matted barrel. This is not very commonly seen. The only matted barrels I've ever seen on Remingtons were on 870's and 11-48's from the 1950's, and oddly enough, all on 16's. I'm sure they did matted barrels on 20's and 12's, but I just haven't seen one.
