You guys know about home-making an oatis pull through like system out of weed whaker line? You melt one end in a suitable diameter casing to shape it, removing the mold after it cools and sharpen the other end of the line cut to desired length. Then just poke the pointed end through center of patch(s), slide it down to other end that is made into a plug, and pull it through the bore. Maybe not convenient to make in the field, but could possibly be a solution when at a camp or such away from home. |

Wahoo, sounds like a simple project. Might make one this weekend just say I did... |

wahoo,
Not a bad idea, however after my tumble down a mountain side that plugged the barrels with snow & mud on my good L.C. Smith double gun, I carried a snake bore soaked in BreakFree in a small plastic bag, in the bottom of my Vest or Grouse Jacket. I cut a branch from a tree to remove the bulk of the snow and mud, then ran the Bore Snake thru the barrels to clean them pretty decently. I finally started leaving the BoreSnake in the SUV because only using it twice in 50 years, it was just excess weight in my hunting Vest or Goretx Grouse jacket.
Making your own is kind of cool also.

Yea, I’d generally prefer a nice factory made kit as you mentioned, the homemade one is mostly a McGuiver option in a pinch. |

I’ve always carried a length of para cord and a cloth in my turkey vest for that reason. Weighs nothing and easy to clean good enough to finish the day. Tie the rag to one end bunched up and pull through. |

Woody402,
The para cord idea is definitely a good one, simple and effective and takes up little room in the vest and can be used for other emergencies also.

Wahoo,
Tried your DIY today with clear trimmer string. Gathered my parts/tools, realized I was just making a 3-foot Texas decoy rig without a weight. Also realized clear trimmer line is cheaper than decoy line (half) yet looks the same in water. Pull plug came from scrap of thick leather, 5/8 round punch, & little slot punch. Choke wrench used for the pull handle.
Worked like an Otis. Made one for each vest & coat. Zip-Lock bag, kit, patches, and 1-ounce little bottle of bore clean. 3.4-ounce total.
Thanks for the idea. Saved $40 & $8 every time I need to refresh the decoy lines...
