I don't seem to be able to find a buyer for my Francotte, but that's ok. It just means I have to add wood to be satisfied with the LOP and the aesthetics. I have a pachmeyer leather slip on pad that does the job, but I want wood because its slicker and quicker to mount the gun. Who does this work and what does a quality job, with etched butt, cost? There are pictures of the gun in the for sale section of Gun Talk.

I would give uncledanfan a pm, he does fantastic work, and if he can't do it, he probably can recommend someone.

I'm shopping at this point, but uncle Dan sounds like a good choice. Can anyone make recommendations? Provided I could afford anything, would it be best to use a dark wood or try to match the present wood? Maybe a starkly different color would look better than a bad wood match?

I don't do the artistic work that UDF does, but if you are interested in extending the stock, having a smooth connection between the two woods, I can send photographs of some of the stocks that I have modified. Not sure what you mean by etching- checkered but in lieu of buttplate?

If you find a good wood doctor, he may well be able to add a piece of walnut that will be a close grain match. Last year I bought a 20 ga Trojan that had at some time gained an extension, almost certainly after someone else had cut it down. Whoever the unknown stockworker was, he matched the extension's grain to the existing so well it is almost unnoticeable. As it is, it's a bit long for me but I haven't had the heart to have such beautiful work cut down.

With a gun as nice as your Francotte, I'd be real reluctant to give it anything but the best workmanship.

Another name I'd suggest is DES/TSD (the Stock Doctor) who also posts on this site.

Thanks for the recommendation Dave. I'm looking to hear from all who are interested. I would obviously post the before and after pictures one day, and I remind all interested parties that I'm months away from sending the receiver off for the job.

16ga, don't know who Molly is but I agree with her. UDF replied to a post of mine the other day and I noticed he had a web link for a signature and clicked on it. I was impressed. Looks like he could really make Two Pipe's extension disappear through I have never met UDF.

Thanks for the recommendations, keep them coming. Can anyone show me some checkered designs on the butt end? I like a solid piece of wood as my buttstock, and I want it etched or checkered like an AYA, but with a unique design. The Francotte has horizontal grooves cut across the butt. Wood is slick for sliding over clothes, and etching or checkering will lock the butt end onto the shoulder of my Filson. Reno

Hi all, If you need some stock work done, Mark (UDF) is the guy. He's done several stock enhancements and refinish jobs for me as well as repairs. I can't say enough good about his work except......Excellent! Never been disappointed by anything he's done for me (this also includes checkering). His rates are reasonable and turn around time is very good.

I'd trust him with stock work anytime!

Good Luck!

Just sent another gun to Mark....after my experience, I'm convinced. Any good stockman has to have some artistic spirit...Mark has got it.

Gentlemen, UDF is a great craftsman/artist. He does great work.

Be it known to all here, Mark and I are not in competition for work. I look forward to the time Mark makes his appearance here at my shop on one of his hunting adventures in OR. I enjoy seeing the projects he does for others.

I too do stock extensions. I have done many over the 23 years in business and the 32 years in the industry. FWIW.
