I have re-posted a revdocdrew thread with a discussion of choke constrictions as an Announcement so it would remain easy to find. The original thread remains on the list.--16ga.

Two helpful charts available (of course the Hallowell chart doesn't include 16g. )

Don't know how useful (or interesting) this information will be but thought I'd pass it along--can't remember just exactly where I copied this chart but I'll try to locate the reference. The complete chart includes 12's and 20's BUT this IS a 16ga. site so----------------
Browning Remington Winchester
BD-.665 BD-.673 BD-.664
Full Choke .628 (.037) .640 (.033) .633 (.031)
Modified .640 (.025) .656 (.017) .648 (.016)
Imp. Cyl. .649 (.016) .665 (.008) .657 (.007)

Chokes and charts----there are two never ending subjects--hows come the makers can't agree on a standard---a real standard among themselves

Colonial Arms has a nice chart (non-back bored barrels).

Woodcock, your chart comes out of Jack O'Connor's "Shotgun Book". Sure shows some differences, especially between Browning and the other two. Especially on older Brownings, of all gauges, their chokes tended to be tighter than anyone else's.

High$Trap, Do you have one of those bore gauges?
If you do, how do you like it.

No sorry, I have never used one. I use a gauge very similar to the Boremaster in my everyday work so I think it would work very well.
I just think it's a little salty price wise for all the more a guy would use it.
I keep tryng to find a choke mic cheap on Ebay.
Hope the charts are usefull though.

A telescoping gauge and an 0-1 mic are fairly inexpensive ( you can get them on Ebay) and accuratly measure bore diameters. Numbers and charts are always fun to study but the old pattern board is what really tells the tale.

I use a Galazan Pro Bore gauge along with Galazan chamber gauge set. I have seen so many shotguns with altered chokes and chambers that I would never consider purchasing a shotgun unless I had measured the restrictions and chambers. A little money spent considering the cost of a good shotgun. -Dick

Agree with Dick. I've encountered several guns with altered barrels although in only one case did it alter my decision to purchase. Helps to know what the manufacturers decided were proper constrictions for their markings, and brings a little more meaning to the patterning work. Which, as Fred states, is required to know what's going on out there where the pellets hit.

Am I reading these charts correctly ? For instance, if a std. bore 16 ga. is .667, then do I subtract the chart decimal number to determine what the muzzle bore should read for the particular choke? Thanks for the help !

thunderstick,
The bore diameter of any gage would reflect a cylinder choke at the end of the tube or no constriction. With that point as the base line any constriction to the bore would make the constriction a minus from the bore diameter. Not being a machinist I still have fun reading gauges used for shotgun barrels.
Best,
Ron |

From L.C. Smith "The Legend Lives" by John Houchins
Standard LC 16 g dimensions post-1936 when the bore was enlarged from .650"
Bore - .662"
IC - .657" or .005 constriction
Mod - .639" or .023 (Standard 16g modified choke is .013-.015)
Full - .629" or .033
16g LC constrictions as tight as .045 have been reported however |

The following is a generally agreed upon list of 16 ga shotgun TRUE BORE DIAMETERS (NON-BACKBORED BARRELS) and a listing of generally accepted choke constrictions (IN THOUSANDS OF AN INCH) noted prior to the choke diameter.
Gauge 16
True Bore Dia. .667
Cylinder Bore .000 - .667
Skeet I .004 - .663
Improved Cyl. .007 - .660
Skeet II .010 - .657
Modified .015 - .652
Improved Mod. .020 - .647
Full Choke .028 - .639
Extra Full .035 - .632
Also please note that variances of .002 (I have been told) are not uncommon as it is difficult to bore to exact measurements. |

I'm a new member and have a couple of questions I hope somebody can help me with. I have a remington 1100 2 3/4 in with screw in chokes. (Ugly son of a gun) I want to use it for duck and goose hunting in Arkansas this year. Are the chokes that came with the gun OK for non-tox? If not where and what choke tubes do I need. Also I need advise on non-tox duck and goose loads, (I would rather not use use steel) and where I can get it. Thanks |

What a can of worms....shotguns by nature are as verible as the weather! Do not get cought up in the specs....Remember this....Every change in shell being fired will also change the patern, Match shell with choke to get what you think you want from your paterns. Do your best to match the task at hand with the proper choke, shot size, velosity of shells being used. Tweek the combanation in use if need be to improve patern or penatration ect. Modified choke for example can be made to shoot like IC or full just by ajusting ammo specs. Particularly wads....If anyone has a gun that is open choke and wants to make it shoot like mod/imp mod buy some Noble sport hunting loads. I have tested them and cut them apart and found the wad has no slits and hold the fired shot charge together mutch longer thus giving tight paterns...thanks all SXS ohio....keep it fun! |
