You may want to check out the one offered by LL Bean.
I have use one for the past three seasons and like it. It does not have any buckles on the straps to hang up on stuff, uses velcro.
That being said, I noticed in the latest Bean hunting catalog that they have made some changes to it from the one I have....one being price. It's not $50 any longer. |

I have the Tin Cloth Filson. It is one of the most bullet proof of its type. I have had mine for about 10 years. It gets used and abused and keeps coming back for more. With that said I am not sure if it is the best all around vest available now. There are more vests to choose from and many more styles than when I purchased my Filson. I guess we can always hve more than one.
Best

Lots of good ideas in this old thread:
http://www.16ga.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=751
For those very few times that I'm not hunting with my dog and can carry alot less stuff, I use a lt weight Cabela's blaze strap vest. With my dog and accoutrements (mini doggie first aid kit, e-collar transmitter, water bottle/cordura bowl, spare check cord, short lead, sometimes a FRS radio) I use the Filson strap vest that has the transmitter pockets shown in the third link. |

Reverand my observation is that you are carrying entireley too much crap. A whistle, bottle of water and your Sterlingworth with its new and improved POW grip and a handfull of ammunition should be quite enough.
As far as the strap vest goes my son confiscated my Filson Tin Cloth vest and seems to be very happy with it. I prefer a vest but may break down and get one to use with my winter coats. |

TB: That's only the half of the crap I'll admit to carrying!
(But have needed to use ALL that stuff a time or two and I'm STILL waiting for my custom princess-of-whales Sterly to come home from the gunsmith ) |

Yeah, that's a mother of a pack. I really don't want a backpack style vest. Although this one does not seem too bad, and is kind of growing on me. I kind of like the idea of having a hydration reservoir vs. carrying a couple of water bottles. I'm just not sure if the front pockets are large enough to accomodate items I would like to have close at hand.
Anyone out here have one of these MOTHER packs? If so, how do you like it and what size are those front pockets? |

Nossman,
See my full comment on the other thread about vests, but I would highly recommend the Orvis "Open Prairie". I've worn out two of them and have tried all the others but keep coming back to the Orvis as the vest of choice.
I have three hunting buddies who also prefer a strap vest and have also tried the other brands and all of them are now using the Orvis.
Revdocdrew,
I've hunted your areas of Arizona and agree that a lot of that is essential there but not always. I didn't see a snakebite kit listed but that is another essential in Arizona. Of course the anti-snakebite medicine taken internally at night at the camp or motel alsways helps

I have both a cover cloth Filson vest and a strap vest from McCalister. I loke the McCalister best, besides it comes in full balze orange. |
