Has anybody here used this spirit-type of stain? I'm trying to re-create a pre-WWII finish on an early M37. What I've got at the moment does not have the garnet-red highlights of the original finish. I was told to try Pilkington's English Red, but it is out-of-stock and backordered everywhere.

Yes, I have used it. It is not the same color and is darker brown than red. It has red in it. It is just not at bright as the Pilkington stain. You may also try Fiebring Ox-blood or Behlen Ox blood. They are not the same color but they are an analyn stain that can and has been used to approach the color. You may use a thinner to dilute the strength. This is an expensive solution to your needs, so see if you can't find someone in your area with either of the two dyes first that will let you "test" which color you wish to use. A shoe shop , leather shop, or saddle maker should have them on hand.

Mr. Smith: How does the Pilkington's Pre-64 compare?

Sweet little 16! Not bad, just not the same as it was. The grass is greener too.

Not exactly pretty, but at least now it's shootable without the fear of loosing any more wood.

This is the original finish. Much more attractive to me.
