The September 2006 Alaska magazine has a picture entitled "Hunting Alaska". Apparently taken near the Swift River, it shows a solitary hunter in a beautiful winter scene.
The caption reads - Moving through a barren winter landscape, a lone hunter hikes through the foothills of the Alaska Range in search of ptarmigan. After landing on a ridge above tree line and finding plenty of of ptarmigan sign in the deep snow, snowshoes and a 16-gauge shotgun become the order of the day.
If you have a chance to thumb thrugh a copy at a news stand, take a look. It is absolutely beautiful. Something I hope to see someday. It's something I'm sure our own Jim McCann sees all the time!! |

I did it with a rifle hunting for fur not feathers for 4 yrs as I had the privilege of living in Anchorage during that time. Whatever you want to do there, hunt, fish, or just look around, it will provide you life-long memories. |

Hunting Alaska is great! I get nostalgic this time of year for the vibrant colors of the tundra and birch forests that are starting to turn colors.
I was fortunate to live there about 18 years and enjoyed hunting a wide variety of birds and game throughout the state. The wide open spaces and relative lack of people are what I miss most.
I hope someday you'll have the opportunity to hunt there as well Ga16ga!
