This idea came out of the trying to figure out if a brl had been cut thread. We might be able to provide an important service to the gun fraternity by providing some data as to the length of choke taper of various guns. Those of you with bore mics (and don't gripe-dove season doesn't start until Friday so what else have you got to do...uh...other than work and reload and do all those honey-dos that aren't going to get do-ed until hunting season ends in Feb Laughing ) please provide the gun, gauge, marked choke, and length of the choke from where it just starts the taper to the end of the brl.
UNFORTUNATELY I'VE STILL GOT 2 STERLYS AND A PARKER AT THE GUNSMITHS Confused so will contribute what I can, when I can. Fox chokes are reported to be 4" also but we'll see. I started a thread on gunshop.com DoubleGunBBS also.
I CAN say that my:
Parker Trojan - 22'- 20g- started full- just more than 4"

We might include year of production if known also-how's it going Dave and HOW MANY PARKERS YOU GOT?
I'll bring my brl reader to Montezuma and we can get some more numbers (the low life philistines I hunt with in S. Dakota all use Montefeltros and SBEs so they'll be no help Rolling Eyes )

Here you go drew. I have but one classic American double.

1937 16ga Sterlingworth, 26" No. 4 weight barrels choked .004 & .014.
Constriction begins 1 7/8" from Rt muzzle, 2 1/2" from Lt.

So it appears the degree of choke has a large effect on the length.

Pete

Thanks Pete
I've received some good data from several guys.
16g Parker guns made from 1891 to 1927 with chokes from .002 to .040 all demonstrated a choke length of 1 1/2" to 2".
Fox 16s had 1 7/8" to 2 1/2" length (not always proportional to the choke) and a Baker 16 had 1 1/2".
Dave M provided some excellent data from the PGCA showing that in full choke 12g. Parkers, the choke was bored with between .007-.010 constriction between 4 and 2 inches with the remainder in the last 2 inches. This is similar to what was found in a limited sample of 12g. Lefever, Remington, and Ithaca guns.
We still need more data from some 20s but it appears possible for a 16g Fox gun to have had the brls cut 2" and still have some choke constriction.

More interesting stuff:

My Fox 16-gauge doubles tend to have chokes about 3 1/2 inches long in the tighter choked barrels until I get to my 1936-vintage 32-inch barrel A-grade and its full chokes are only 2 1/2 inches long, and are .034" in the left barrel and .035" in the right barrel.
