Sprocket young dude that you are please accept one little bit of additional advice.

Spend $20.00 and join the 16 gauge low pressure group. They have more 16 gauge reloading data plus a lot of additional information about hulls and wads than you can shake a stick at. The contact information is at the top of this forum.

And if you do all of that you can rest assured that you will be accepted by all and Prince Charming will invite you to the Prom. Now whatever happens after the Prom.....well thats between two consenting adults.

Thanks 16GG - now I gotta clean beer off my screen...fawker Cool

2Bbl - Yes, it was my intention to join once I got basic equipment and should turn back before it's too late - some of the lingo tossed around here - paper wad cup, etc - has gone over my head but I'm trying. My earlier request to actually take part in the process was to help alleviate some Q's (posted here anyway) and learn more before I get too caught up in the investements...

Actually - when I ask such newb Q's, I hope to make it easy for future referals to find/read and gain knowledge from initail queries.

After treading the "6 pulls = 1 shell" bit, I'm re-thinking things & calculating volume...

Sproket,
Seems that we are both looking to start reloading in the very near future. I have enjoyed following this thread. The information found here as well as my own research has led me to my decision of purchasing a MEC Sizemaster. At this point in my life, I don't shoot enough to warrent buying a progressive reloader. However, that may change one day. When (not so much as if) that day comes, I will buy a progressive machine, then have both. Wink Now since you are like 16gg said, most of us American males, and will read the instructions if and only if all else fails. Check this little video out.

If you prefer to drive modified Jeeps and drink dark micro brewed beer, then we have even more in common.
Good Luck on the reloading!

Wise idea. Resizing steel rims is a bigger pain in the butt than some folks realize without a collet type resizing station, especially for repeaters like my model 37 Ithaca. I do have a couple of 600 juniors I use for specialty loads, but I now do all my resizing on the Grabber before hand and skip station one on the single stage presses.

A random update - I've been assembling components here and there joining the LPG momentarily.

Recently I found a MEC 600jr that looked to be once used - I didn't pick it up but will if it's there when I get back.

I know, I know - the sizemaster...I'm looking for a used sizer too. I'm not in too much of a rush on things as I still need a few things before I can start to assemble shells and if the 600 is gone, oh well. I can wait.

I've been reading the posts here as well as on SGW - if anyone can recommend another site - aside from the aforementioned LPG - I'd be interested in doing some more research.

Thanks All

Sprocket,
Between this site and the LPG site, you don't need any other site. Wink
In all seriousness, I don't think there is much more out there.
You could try : http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/index.php
But when things come up about 16 gauges, they generally get referred to one of the other sites.

Hey Sprocket!

I started reloading a couple of years ago. I was completely new to it.

My recommendation is that you start with the MEC Sizemaster. After you master reloading on the Sizemaster and if you need higher production rates you can go to a progressive reloader. I started with the Sizemaster and purchased a MEC 9000GN a few months ago. It would have been very difficult for me to have started out on a progressive reloader.

I repeat the recommendation that you join the reloaders group. Most cost effective $20 you will spend on reloading 16 gauge shells.

Best,

Mike

Sprocket,
I see you are in MA. I wouldn't mind setting up a grabber for you if chose to go progressive right off the bat. I am in CT, and having someone there to save you from yourself would be well worth it. There seem to be many others in MA as well.

Hi Jim - thanks for the generous offer - I'm really leaning towards the Sizemaster due to the relatively low volume I require - I'm even contemplating a 600jr and just suffer the sizing issues too.

I posted up a while back to see if anyone would mind if watched the process before I actually got heavily involved...

So Mike - you upgraded huh? How's that SM77 treating you? Wink

waiting to hear back from the LPG. I ordered some stuff yesterday too...

Sprocket I use the Sizemaster to do small runs of certain hunting loads and to fill-in steps when the 9000 mis-steps and i need a primed hull or a primed hull with powder to keep everything in sequence.

Best,

Mike

What if I sent you a single stage machine like a 600jr for those "one off" shells so you're not hogging up a fine machine from the rest of us? Razz

(coulda been worse, I coulda said "Lee Load-All II")

Thanks for the in put Mike - and All

these guys talked me into a sizemaster, and it is the ticket, and I'm still cranking out shells slow but sure on my Lee Load All.... no fuss, no mess....

Good luck. Load Alls show up on ebay frequently, and they are inexpensive and they work..... I have a couple of spares for parts tucked under the bench in case somethin' gives..... if you get one and somethin' gives, let me know and I'll send you parts.... Smile

B'gun

sprocket and all,

I've greatly enjoyed reading this thread and will continue to follow it. My first 16 is due to arrive tommorrow and at $63 or so per flat, methinks I had best learn to reload! I've toyed with the idea for years, MANY years! Just never went and did it. But now I'm single so I'm INVESTING my $ in shooting instead of WASTING it on women!

So here's a question. I currently buy my 20 guage shells at the range I usually shoot at....estate shells, and pay about $49 per flat. A little high, but the nearest Wally World is 45 minutes away and between gas and time (do any of us have enough of that?) it just seems easier to buy them at the range. 16 guage as I said run about $63 at the range.

So, when all is said and done, am I going to save any $ rolling my own? The time factor (drive to Wally World/roll my own) I guess is a wash (though making my own shells would be a new and fun addition to my rediscovery of the shooting sports.) My current cost is about $4.90 per box/20 guage...$6.30 per box/16 guage. For the clays range will I realize any savings by rolling my own?

Thanks for your time.
