A friend I hunt with has grown tired of my constant support for the 16 gauge and has decided to join our family. He called me today and requested some recommendations for new or used sxs models. He wants to stay under $2,500 and 6.5 pounds, he said no exposed hammers, and would rather stick to something that can shoot modern 2 3/4 ammo. I told him I would do one better and ask more qualified people for their feedback.

Are the Merkel 1620s about $2500? If so, I think they meet the other specs.

Fortuna (Suhl) SxS ~ 16 GA offered by Cabela's looks like a nice one. Most of these German built guns are crafted on very well crafted generic blocks and trigger groups produced for the European industry by the same manufacturer which produces Merkels. Barrels may or may not be from Merkel. If they are, then you can be reasonably sure they will be accurately regulated. I think you might get the Cabela'sgun room dealer bend some on the price too if you sound like you know your stuff and you are polite.

I've had both good and bad experiences dealing w/ a couple of the different Cabela's Gun Rooms. The integrity of each one depends on the staff there. Some are excellent, but a few are less than honest in my experience. So I first advise caution. If you can't get to the store to see the gun first hand, then make sure they expressly agree to a free look period before you finally accept any gun they ship to you. Good luck.

I have a nice Utica-Fox Sterlingworth made in 1939, with 28" barrels opened to .006" and .012" that I would sell for $1300 plus shipping.

In terms of value, it would be hard to argue against the Dickinson. If the Uggie had tubes, that would be a different story.
