I still have my 20 gage H&R which was my first shotgun. Tried to shoot it a couple years back and couldn't hit squat. Same with a 12 gage NEF belong to my Dad. I find the 5 to 5 1/2 pound weight of these guns makes it impossible for me to hit anything. I can do good work with a single shot Baikal that weighs about 6 1/3 pounds. Hope you don't suffer the same problem.

My first shot gun is a 16 H&R Topper - now 23 years old or so...my favorite gun to take for walks in the woods to scare game.

In the time I've owned it, I've shot at game 3 times = 3 kills.

No, I don't get out much with it but when I do, it's very high quality tme.

welcome on!

I have a very heavy 10ga H &R model 176 with rifle sights that weighs as much as two of my 16 doubles.Used to use it for deer in NJ,one shot, recover from recoil and find deer, that does not gor far.Three easy steps.Another one that gets no use and should go but neat guns and case colored.

I just received a fitted and proofed 16ga barrel from H&R for my SB2 handi-rifle. $40 plus shipping is good value. But you get exactly what you pay for...a very crude exterior. It does match my .223 Rem rifle barrel though.

I ordered it only to install a strain guage to test loads on my Oehler M43PBL. But doesn't everyone shoulder their new firearm? I did and got a suprise. I couldn't shoot a duck or pheasant or claybird if I bet the farm on it. The rifle stock has almost no drop to it so there is no way to sight down the barrel at the brass front bead. Oh well. I can always order a shotgun stock for it in the future if I find I need to use it for hunting or practice instead of my B Rizzini.

Buckweet-

The first gun I hunted with was my grandfathers Winchester model 37 single shot in 16ga when I was 10yrs old. I used a single shot .410 Iver Johnson before that. The 37's 28" barrel is choked full, but I've never had any problem hitting what I'm aiming at. I was given the gun 5 yrs ago when grandpa passed on and have used it off and on since. It was my first 16 and certainly holds a special place in my heart.

I enjoy hunting and shooting with the 37. Last month I went 23/25 Cool with it just throwing clays in a field. That's nothing spectacular but, it beat my brother with a 12ga 870 at 19/25 and my dad with a 20ga 870 at 21/25. Both of them shot more than 25 times I might also add. I didn't have to open the second box...

I usually get a funny look or two when I pull it out to hunt with in SD for pheasants. As in, "I can't believe you're comfortable with only one shot" Shocked , as everyone else is shooting pumps or auto's. I also hunt with a pump regularly but, I notice that I connect with my first shot much more often after I use the single shot for a couple of fields. Very Happy

Anyway, congrats on the new purchase. I'm sure you will love it! Be sure to let us know how you shoot it when it comes in! Smile

chop.....
im really looking forward to this new shotgun, i've always loved the old single barrels.
my grandpaw had a old iver johnson .410, that we boys shot alot too.
grandpaw also had a rem,1100 in 16 and a browning sweet sixteen,
my pop used a old winchester model 370 and a 97 pump in 16.
all of my uncles hunted with the 16 too.[870's] so ? yaa. we big fans of the the 16ga.
pop thinks ? he bought the single barrel 370 in 62 ? or 66 ? he caint remember exactly what year. but he does remember he bought it in claremore oklahoma.
called him the other night, told him that i bought a H&R [NEF] 16ga, he got all excited, was very happy to hear that the old 16 is making a fair comeback.[and that they was even making them again]
said he had several box's of old paper shells he'ed give me,
but i gotta bring my new shotgun with me...[grin]... im afraid ? he might be the owner when i leave...lol !!
but i'ed just buy another.

looking forward to the weekend !!!

I've got a NEF 20ga that had its barrel cut off. Is it possible to order a 16ga barrel that will fit right on the original frame? Is it cheaper to just buy a new NEF 16? They're pretty cheap.

The best source for an answer is the factory...

I suspect you may be able to do it though.

Surprised Before you send any H&R to the factory for a barrel, call them 1st!
They will only do this for receivers past a certain serial number, that is after the current company ownership took place!

I have an NEF/H&R 16ga that I bought new, as well as a 12ga Tracker II slug gun, a 20ga Pardner and a 410 bore H&R. I can hit clays and squirrels with any of the shotguns as well as with my LC Smith 16ga......
They are generally my foul weather and backup guns.......

I have an NEF 16 single in full choke. It is a great reliable gun. Good for squirrels and trap. I dont think you can wear one out.

I do
Its my trap gun
in 3 monthes of use I got my first 25/25 score in trap ever.
I had previously used WINCHESTER 140 12ga and Mossberg 500 with hi rib
trap barrel in 12ga. Never did better than 23 with those.
