Was hunting in northern New York over the weekend The Woodcock are on the move and the grouse #'s seem good. Its still to thick to see them or shoot at them yet. On Saturday afternnon from 1:30 to 4 we moved 17 grouse and 6 woodcock shot 1 grouse and 2 woodcock. Sunday from noon to 3pm we moved 13 grouse and 5 woodcock we shot 2 of each. Anyway that is a big improvement over last seasons #'s. Once the leaves are down hunting should be pretty darn good.

Good to hear. Hopefully those timber doodles will be heading down here to NJ. They open in the northern part of the state on Oct 19. I'm going to head out and try to find some then. Grouse also opens then but I doubt I'll run into many in the areas I hunt.

I took Hagrid, my 10 m/o Setter, out last weekend for his first hunt. As might be expected there was a lot of wild running around, but the first day, we did flush a partridge and 2 woodcock (with a good point on one, though no shot) and a flash point (kinda, but shot taken) the next day on 1 woodcock with bumps on 5 more. 16gg, the Green Dot with 7/8oz of 8 will do the job as you said.

When one only shoots one bird, one has to take a picture to get maximum mileage out of it, so....

fin,

That's my Poli 1620. It's laying right above a fresh moose print in the picture below:

I think you're right with that wind/rainstorm we had the other night to take down some of the foilage. We might have some cooler temps too which would suite Hagrid and me just fine.

I hope the woodcock don't all breeze through before I can get back out though; I've got "obligations" this weekend. Sad

From what I've seen, Nice for the $$ you might want to check with dehann though, they have awesome customer service
.

Seb, got up to fryburg for that job sat. Got there late, and didn't finish till almost 4. Still took Beau the super slab out for a spin(san-gun, which figures) put up 6 wood cock and 2 grouse in a hour. My buddy up ther says 2 days prior he'd moved 30 wood cock, and a dozen grouse over the course of the day(and he's not one to BS) covered more land of course, but sems to be a few birdies that neck of the woods.

Seb, I was up at Libby Camps for the opener. We saw excellent numbers of woodcock, not all that many grouse. From comments from one other hunter, sounded to me like the grouse were still in family groups at that point. Beautiful country, my first time ever in the North Maine woods.

Well the woodcock got even thicker this weekend. Moved 12 in a little over 2 hours the pup pointed 2 so I shot them for him. That was a good move because he pointed 6 sunday morning. Its still a little to thick for the grouse I can't see 3/4 of them the other 25% are just a flash. We have some old pastures grown up with birch and silver dogwood. All the woodcock were in little ravines choked with Dogwood. Two of my buddy's were hunting ducks saturday morning on the St. Lawrence river 8 miles away. They said they saw woodcock flying across the river for the first few hours of daylight. Get out in the woods if you have the time or better yet make time.
