Rick, believe me, we left plenty of healthy birds in the woods yesterday. We are pretty much the end of the line for East Coast migration and that plays into our numbers late season. Highlight of the day, and the season for me, was Abby on point ahead of us about 70 yards, out of sight. Twenty feet from her and between us was a Hurricane Matthew felled oak, about 2.5" in diameter, barely off the ground and parallel to it. Willa was on top of the tree trunk, locked down, balancing and backing Abby where she stayed until we flushed two birds and bagged one. We had to climb over the trunk to get to Abby. Hopefully I can close the season Tuesday. I will move heaven and earth to do so. Gil
PS: Great signature line you have and how true it is. |

2016-2017 woodcock season is a wrap. Floyd, Billy, Willa, Abby and I went this a.m. (31st) and found a few birds, 7, and managed to put two in the bag. It was a great season for us. Viewer’s left to right: Billy, Abby, Willa and Floyd, the Woodcock Whisperer. Last photo is Abby 4 seasons ago. Jeff, Floyd and I had a three gun limit on the last day of the season, three years ago today. Abby is the glassy-eyed and one tired dog with the birds. She was on the ground all day. The late Snap and Pop alternated during the hunt and Willa hadn’t been born.

I closed out the season over the weekend; I have to say it was brutal. Three of us hunted about eight hours on Saturday and about six on Sunday. My nephew got one rooster on Saturday and I got one on Sunday. My brother-in-law never fired his gun.
I fired a total of five shells the whole weekend, including a clean miss with both barrels on the best shot I had - and a couple of prayers I threw that I probably shouldn't have - and not counting four that I shot at a water bottle thrown in the air because I had my quail gun along and never saw a single bird to shoot at. Here's a pic; truth to tell it's from a few years ago but this is what it would have looked like had I bothered to take a photo...

Was able to make another bird hunt this past Monday with my Browning 16ga; it was a more comfortable hunting day at 48° than the previous weeks hunt (at 76°). The birds proved very useful to us on Friday evening. I plan on another bird hunt the last day of February and am hoping to line up a rabbit hunt before the month is out. OH

Old Hunter: Filson's chaps? I have used them here in Maine and out in Wyoming for 10-15 years and find they work very well. Obviously working for you as well.

Thanks gents. Greg, yep they are Filson chaps (single tin); had them a long time. Like a lot of my Filson gear, they were bought from Hill's in Raleigh, unfortunately another multi-generation family-owned sporting goods dealership that's now out of business. Savage16, here is my recipe, hope my scratching is understandable. OH

Decided to go "retro" yesterday on what may be my last squirrel hunt of the season. Took an old Mossberg 190-KA 16ga bolt action that I haven't carried in years. It was a cold, windy day but managed to get three.

In about 12 days, I'll have a new addition:
I don't know for sure which one I'm getting, and have not picked out a name. The kennel will name him/her for the breed book, so I'll see what the given name is first...

I don't think I've ever seen a litter where all the pups have such similar markings. They all look like winners to me. Congrats on your new pup. Let the adventure begin. |

Not a 16 ga. but here's a nice photo from a snowshoe hunt along a good pass a few weeks ago. I arrived late (actually the geese flew half hour early) and only got under one flock. A friend and I went earlier the next day and did real well but I forgot the camera! It's not very often anyone goes snowshoeing for geese. Winter has been a bit cold wet this year.
