In a quest for a high performance non-toxic 2 1/2" 16 ga load, I sent
Tom Armbrust the following 2 1/2" ITX load for testing:

The load uses 2 1/2" Cheddite (trimmed Herters) hull, Cheddite 209 primer, 24 gr. Alliant Steel powder, 1 oz #4 ITX-10, and PT1680 wad (trimmed 1/4 in., 4 slits). The load fits snugly in the 2 1/2" hull, no card or filler needed.

The results for 5 rounds were as follows:
1. 1285 fps, 11400 PSI
2. 1298 fps, 11700 PSI
3. 1278 fps, 11500 PSI
4. 1312 fps, 12400 PSI
5. 1292 fps, 11200 PSI
avg 1295 fps, 11640 PSI
EV 34 fps, 1200 PSI

Except for one outlier (no. 4), the load looks quite good. I'm not sure what happened with round no. 4; one round had a poor crimp which might have been the problem.

This data is for informational purposes only and does not constitute an endorsement of the load. I'm not sure what I will do with this load. I may use it in my 2 1/2" A-5 anyway, but being more careful with the crimps. Or I may go with a load with slightly less powder. It would be interesting to see test results for a similar load with a 1/2 grain or so less powder.

Thanks for sharing , should work for close range decoying ducks or pointed close range birds . I would consider it as a max load starting point and wouldn't be afraid to use the load with a 1/2gr reduction . I would load 8-10 of them with the 1/2gr reduction in powder and run them over a crono and see how they do .

It's a decent load if you're okay with a load that averages 140 PSI over SAAMI recommended maximum pressure.

I'd back off the powder a little bit just to be safe, but that's just my opinion.
