Does anyone have a steel dove load they would be willing to share? I'm looking for 1300-1350fps in 7/8 or 15/16 oz load. I have vp80 and csd16 wads, steel, blue dot, longshot, lilgun, and universal powder, federal rio cheddite and fiocchi hulls, and just about every primer as well.
I won a lottery hunt on a state managed site for opening day which requires steel. I'd really like to not have to take my 12ga if I can find something to load for the 16.

NON-TOXIC (steel)

Load# 150619-6656

HULL: Rio 16-gauge 2.75”

PRIMER: RIO209

PROPELLANT: Hodgdon LIL’GUN 45.0 Grains

WAD: CSD16 (3 slits)

Mica dust wad, please.

SHOT: 7/8-ounce (382 gr.) Steel Shot #2

FOLD CRIMP: 6-point

Results: 10100 PSI 1590 FPS

I would use 40grns of this powder unless there was significant un burned powder left in the barrel

mc,
Another alternative.

I've been using a steel load for about ten years now on quail on refuge land, and during the late dove season i shoot quite a few doves with it too. It came from a No. 5 Lyman I had access to as I recall, I wrote the important info down on a notepad, but I didn't write down the velocity. It is listed for a Winchester plastic, plastic basewad hull, which is essentially a Cheddite-type straight walled hull. I've loaded this load in Win, Fiocchi, PMC, Rio, Nobel Sport and probably a few more brands over the years. Anyway,

Win plastic, plastic basewad hull
7/8 oz steel (I use #7s mostly)
22.0 Grains of STEEL (I believe this load is listed in other places with more powder
to get higher velocities.)
Fed 209A
B/P Multimetal wad (a VP80 now, I believe, what I use) slit 4 ways.
Pressure is about 7800-8000 as I recall.
Don't remember velocity, but I believe it is about 1200.

Since I no longer have access to a Lyman's No 5, you may want to verify this load with someone who does.

The same load is listed with Federal hulls with everything the same except 22.5 grains of STEEL. (It is also listed in Rem plastic, plastic basewad hulls at 21.0 grains of STEEL, but pressure is higher, but still modest, due to thicker plastic walls on the hulls.)

I've shot hundred and hundreds of these over the years.

mc,

Me again.

The loads above are on the Yahoo site, along with quite a few others.

The velocity of the Win hull is 1325 with 9200 pressure.
The velocity of the Fed hull is 1285 with 8400 pressure.
The velocity of the Rem hull is 1280 with 10,600 pressure.

So I was a little off on the pressures, especially for the Rem SP hull.

Thanks for the info. I'm probably going to use the Winchester / cheddite w/ steel load. I always forget Lyman's has a small 16ga steel section.
