I notice that most of my SxSs have a small fracture in the solder near the shell chamber. Does anyone know what drives this? Can it result in an unsafe weapon?

It would help if you could be a lot more specific, or better yet, provide pictures.
What model sxs are we talking about?
How old are they?
What do you mean by solder near the chamber?

The more details you provide, the better answers we can give.

Pete

If the solder that holds the ribs in place is cracked over the chambers it may be an indication of a very slight barrel bulge in the chamber area.

Look this over very carefully.....

One sure way of detecting a slight bulge in a chamber is to make a plaster of paris cast. Clean both chambers thoroughly and use a good release agent. Then plug both barrels just below the throat with modelling clay and make your cast. If there is no bulge, and you've properly applied the release agent, the slight taper to the chamber will allow you to push the cast out from the muzzle end with a slight tap from a steel rod. If the chamber is bulged, you will need to break the cast to get it out.

Be sure to clean out the chamber and barrel thoroughly after. Calcium will corrode the steel if left in there. However, don't worry about the slight staining you might get. A few firings and cleaninging and perhaps a polishing with OOOO steel wool wrapped around an old bronze brush will eliminate it completely.

Guys, he's saying that MOST of his SxS's have this crack. Something doesn't sound right.
