just picked up this Lefever 16 ga single barrel, marked Long Range Field and Trap Gun. made 1937, 28 in barrel, muzzle measures a very tight .620. No case hardening left on the receiver. traded a 16 ga Iver Johnson and $200 for it. anyone else have one?

I have a very early one made in 1927, serial number 3xx. Unfortunately it's a 12 gauge.... |

mine is a 12ga trap with Ithaca tapered rib . Shoot it during the summer with lite loads just because the extractor blew up one day and couldn't find one of the parts( chamber part is glued in and a finger poke to get empties out One piece hulls only !) . very simple action if repairs are ever needed . |

The frames of these Ithaca built Lefever single barrel guns were blued, not color case hardened. You probably don't want to read Harry Howland's comment about the Lefever single barrel at the bottom of the first column on page 207 of Walter's book!! |

Henry Howland was the Ithaca factory manager during the 1920s. He and Nestor Smith, the chief engineer, designed the Lefever single barrel gun. Mr. Howland said he thought it was the poorest gun he ever helped design.
It should be pointed out that Henry Howland helped design the New Ithaca Double and the Model 37 pump gun. He also designed an improved process for making the trigger for the Model 1911A1 automatic pistol during World War II. So he did some excellent work, but for some reason he wasn't very proud of the Lefever single barrel gun. |

went and shot it, it patterned even, then shooting trap with a portable thrower, it was hard to hit with the tight choke, but when I did, it dusted them. had a few failure to fires, my fault, did not know the top lever cocked the hammer and I did push it over far enough. |

Are you happy with it? If you are, that's all that counts!

Seems like we had a thread last year on someone buying one for a child's starter gun. If my memory serves, it seems the gun had some structural issues regarding the stock, and I believe he paid more than you for his, even considering your partial trade. Sounds like you got a real deal. Enjoy! Gil |

do not get in the habit of not fully cocking the gun . If it doesn't go in the sear , then the FP is still protrudeing and the gun will go off at any time when it is closed - same if the FP shaft breaks . |
