At what serial number did Winchester start to chamber there 16 ga. guns for 2 3/4" shells. Are all 2 3/4" guns marked 2 3/4"? I've been looking at a few and want to stay away from a short chamber gun. I know just load 2 1/2" shells or have the chamber lengthened. I do but I mainly load 2 3/4" shells and want to shoot them.

they started in 27 or so.....original 2 3/4in guns will be marked on the barrel and until the mid/late 30s also marked by the serial numbers.....

You should also be aware that many pre-1927 16ga guns that were made with short chambers (2 9/16") have been converted to handle 2 3/4" shells. I have a vintage-1919 Model 12 that was converted and it works fine.

Conversions were done either by the Winchester factory or a gunsmith. The original shell openings on the old guns was increased from 2 7/16" to 2 1/2" and the lower front radius of the opening was increased from 1/4" to 3/8". And, of course, the chamber was reamed out to 2 3/4". (Source: "The Winchester Model Twelve" by George Madis)
