In the ongoing saga of what to do with the Cheddite 1632 wad(as sold by Graf's), I thought I had a decent load worked out with 800X, but was told the wad raised pressures too high. Seems someone else had some tested with 23 grains 800X, 1 1/8oz shot in a cheddite case and got pressure up around 12,400-12,500. My load was at 22 grains and patterned great at 1230-1240fps. I was going to send it in for testing, but couldn't find anyone in this rural area that would accept it for shipping.
I decided to try Longshot, every load I've seen published was on the low end pressure wise, so I'm hoping the wad will work within limits.
In Cheddite case with the Federal 209A primer(for cold weather performance), 23.3 Longshot, I used a 28 gauge card wad on the powder , followed by the 1632 wad, 1 1/8 Nickle plated #5 shot with a 6 point crimp. I used the 1/8" card wad for stack height and the 28 gauge wad nestles in the cup of the plastic wad fine. Some state the additional card wad under the plastic wad messes with pressures, others say they've seen no problem. I don't know, just trying to save the depth of the shot cup while still getting good stack height. I tried 22 gr. Lonshot but was just under 1200 fps so I went to the next larger bushing and it throws 23.3. Chronograph shows 1250 fps average.
Patterns don't look bad, tested at 30 yards with IC/Mod choke tubes in my Dickinson 28" SxS.
IC tube

Might be a little patchy at this distance, but core coverage isn't bad

Mod tube

I think this one would stretch out for long shots.

Only two patterns, but until I find a shipper to send some in for testing this will probably be all I'll try. The 22-800X load was actually more even patterns but it needs tested too.
I've got SP-16, Z-16, and SG-16 wads, but they don't pattern as well as the 1632 with this amount of shot in my gun.
Has anyone else tried Longshot and this wad?

I was the guy that had 23.0 grains of 800-X tested.

No reason that the load you have of 23.0 grains won't work. That should be more than enough running room.

I like that Cheddite wad, but I really like the load I am currently using, that is why I stopped working with the load development.........and the fact that I have one bag of the Cheddite wads and a case of the Remington SP-16 wads!! Shocked Cool

My favorite bird load is 25grains of Longshot 1632 with a 1/4" WOOL felt under 32grams of #6 Chilled shot. IC then C chokes in my Dickinson. What type of loader do you use. If it is a PW I can send you a powder bushing that will drop what you need.

The wads I have are in a plastic bag from Grafs that have their name printed on it and a handwritten "cheddite 1632". No "B" as in one of your links, but was bought in the 500 count quantity. Pretty obvious they broke down a bulk shipment to make up the 500 count bags.
My loader is a MEC Sizemaster, the #23 bushing I used gave just under 22 grains, the #24 bushing was 23.3. I have an adjustable bar if I need to go in between. The 1 1/8oz bar has been opened up to drop just under 1 1/8 oz Nickel plated 5's.

DC37, would you mind posting the load you are currently using? I'm sure you've done it before, just takes time to look through all the posts to find it.
Thanks

Graf's 1632 wad is the same as the Activ G-32. Some data for it can be found in Lyman's 4th edition and old Activ booklets. Probably useless information now, though, since Activ shells are no longer available in the U.S.

Thanks, I have the components except for the Federals. Lots of Cheddites though. About the only Federals I find around here are the #6 shot and plenty costly. Might need to do a preserve hunt to empty some of them for my own loading.

bowbuilder had this one tested

Load #3: (Also pattens good...shell crimp is a little dished)
· 1 1/8 oz #6 lead shot (Remington)
· Cheddite Green Hull (8 mm brass) 2 ¾” 16 ga
· Win209 Primer
· 24 grains Longshot powder
· Cheddite 1628 wad

FPS (1287, 1327, 1302, AVG 1305 ES 40)
PSI (10200, 10900, 10700, AVG 10600 ES 700)

I had this load tested by Tom Armburst awhile back .

Ched Red 2 1/2" hull - once fired
Ched 209 Primer
18.5 grains Unique
Ched 1632 wad from Grafs
1oz 7 1/2 Lawrance Mag shot
6 fold crimp
5 shots
fps 1220 ev 20 , psi 10500 ev 900

this is one of the best 1oz loads I have ever shot , killed alot of birds and targets with it , ,but it is in a 2 1/2" hull which some won't like.

The 1628 and 1632 the same wad except the 1628 wad has the little finger nubs in the over powder cup .

fn16ga-
Was that 2 1/2" load you listed with a star crimp or a roll crimp? I'm currently trying to decide which way to go, and had just assumed I'd probably need to roll crimp to have enough room in the shorter shells.
