S16,

Can't say regarding more open patterns with my recent fiber wad shells, as I have not put them on paper (its on the long list to do), but I work on that assumption. In general, I think one will find that to be the case. Years ago, when I patterned lots of loads, it certainly was true for those fiber loads I patterned (when I started reloading, plastic wad were just coming available!). Remember, a high percentage of older guns are choked M/F as paper shells with fiber wads were all that was available at the time. While a lot of these older guns were designed primarily with waterfowl hunting in mind, fiber wad patterns also must have played into the mix.

For what its worth, my NID (2 and 4 choke), measures .656 and .640. I do not have a bore gauge, but if anywhere near .665, then my NID has some pretty "loose" measurements for M/F, particularly M.

s16,

By the way, my model 37, also marked Mod, measures .655. Back when I shot it a lot, I always considered it a "loose" Modified.

Choke designations can vary a lot between manufacturers--my 'Auto 5 is star-marked as Modified, and measures .639!!! It shoots like a full choke!

Any good fiber wad loads using Herco? I think 22or 23 grains would be about right for either 7/8 or one ounce loads. Federal hulls. Winchester 209 primers. Mostly clay targets. Thanks in advance

I enjoyed shooting a couple rounds of skeet this morning with my 1924 LC Smith Ideal model using 2 1/2" Cheddite hulls{cut down } with 21gr Universal,2 nitro cards, 1/2'fiber wad, 7/8oz of 8 shot held in with a roll crimp.
the loads shot well and broke the skeet targets well(when I had my leads right) and I did better than i had been shooting lately.

Smile

Today was a wonderful Trap, Crazy and Skeet day !

I used a Remington 3200 with 16 gauge barrels and the
OLD Winchester Dove and Quail hull with Green Dot
and 7/8 ounce of shot.

Breaks the targets with authority and gives the SMOKE and SMELL of old

What Fun

Mike

when I decided I needed to create the super mag at the goading of Mark and Mike Campbell , i really thought i had to really go chicken sh++ ! I took the mag load for 11/4 out of my Lyman 2 , and the 1st load was with card and fiber - @ 1050 fps and @7800psi ! .... the home run load was exactly the same with a DR OP and fiber filler - 1230fps and 9800 psi - homer on that one - the only diff in the 2 loads was that plastic gas seal !(25gr Blue Dot , chedd primer and 600 grns shot )

Hi.
Perhaps you can point me in the right direction here, but my copy of Lyman 2nd edition does not show any 16g 1 1/4 OZ loads close to the speed and pressure noted above.
Also, most if not all data in my Lyman 2 show pressure in LUP rather than psi. Did Lyman issue different versions of the 2nd ed.?
Thanks for any advice.

harkom - Lyman#2 : fed,fed , sp16 ,25 blue dot ,11/4= 1205 & 9900lup . 10k + psi....also loads for rem SP & win comp formed cases . My original load with card OP was low ballistics to say the least ! the home run shot was with the DR op cup and the fiber filler , which is more equivalent to the old PGS wad and fiber filler . The load stood up even with the shot going to 13/8 ! The 13/8 load was tested by Precision : 1225 fps and 9900psi . The brave soul could probably go to 27grns Blue Dot - would be a REAL attn grabber !
