I'm wondering if chokes are opened by removal of metal or if by swaging the area of the barrel to a more open size.

Metal removal. If you look at the ends of a double barrel that has open and tight chokes one can see the thinner metal at the end of the open barrel. It's more apparent with one choke being extra full and the other cylinder. Gil

This is why ultra high velocity steel shot loads were invented. Just keep pounding them through the choke at the speed of light until the choke swells out to the desired measurement. Use the biggest shot size available for quickest results. Anyone buying this?

This link explains the process of opening a choke.

I witnessed my cousin stick his 20 ga barrel in the creek to shoot an old submerged bottle when I was kid. It opened his choke to “funnel”. Thankfully he was uninjured and only a couple inches of barrel suffered.

Ah yes, childhood hi jinx. It is amazing many of us have eyebrows left for the purpose of telling convincing stories, either due to our own lack of foresight or our willingness to stand too close while watching someone else make a mistake.

Carefully and measure twice , cut once routine.

Swaging is for increasing constriction.
Reaming is slow and methodical removing constriction.

I had an older fellow tell me when he was a kid he purposely loaded a shotshell with a double charge of powder and fired it off . Luckily he wasn't injured but 3 years later while cleaning the gutters on the house he found part of his gun.

A lesson was learned/passed on by a friend of mine when his skeet loads suddenly sounded very loud and booming. He took one apart and found shot lighter than normal and powder almost doubled. He lived in an apartment and concluded a maintenance man had turned the dials on his loader's universal charge bar.

My brother and I went crow calling after I finished loading my first box of 16 ga ever. I killed two out of the first group, reloaded in time to throw up on a single and pop! (Way under charged) My wad and shot could’ve been thrown father. My brother doubled over laughing and the crow flew away unscathed.
