Well, I never thought I would see it happen! The name Franchi and 16 gauge in the same gun description!

In my part of the upland world--bobwhite quail hunting--Franchi had a lot to do with the demise of 16 gauge as favorite bird guns! Sixteens were very common, with the Ithaca M37 a favorite, during the middle part of the 20th century and during my youth in the 50s and 60s. Then along came the Franchi AL48 20 gauge at around 5 lbs. It took my part of the bird-hunting world by storm, and 16 gauges went to market or the closet en mass. With no comparable lightweight 16 gauge on the market at the time, well, you know the rest of the story.

My dad bought an Ithaca/SKB 20 gauge semi-auto instead of the Franchi, as it too was a super lightweight gun. Me, I stuck to M37s, M12s, Auto-5s, and later Citoris in 16 gauge. I prefer a gun of around 6-7 lbs to a lightweight one, and I still prefer a 16 gauge for upland game.

I believe there are a number of bird hunters out there that will appreciate the new Franchi.

Very light 5# 6 oz. well balanced for an alloy frame 3/8 to 1/2” forward of hinge and
A little more drop than the 12 and 20 which I also own. Things or thing I don’t like,
only comes with 3 chokes.

Did you measure the drops?

“Light and long” has always been the safest bet. I’d go 28” in a package that light. Longer if I could! JMO!

Drop at heel is 2 3/16” instead of 2” on my 12 and 20.

The specs on the catalog call for 2". darn it! I was hoping for less drop.

Shot three boxes of 1 ounce 1165 Herters 6’s out of today. Pointed very nice hit where I was looking( 6’ 200#s average arm length) functioned flawlessly on all shots same as the 20 and 12. What I like more about this gun besides the obvious 16 is the slightly more drop at heel, which makes for a better gun on going away quail from a pointed dog then the higher drop for incoming birds. It handled the 1 once loads very well as far as recoil goes but this load is as far as I would take it for practice at only 5#s 6 ozs. And I am not recoil sensitive. Only thing I will be changing is getting rid of the red worm sight same as on my other gauges in this model. As far as the automatic safety, it doesn’t bother me in a field gun which this is. Any specific questions feel free to ask. I for one am glad a manufacturer decided to take on the challenge of making a truly lightweight 16 o/u. ( by way made for franchi by bettinsoli of Italy)

P. S.
Called about chokes as it only comes with IC,M,and full. You can also get C and IM from franchi. They say they are mobile style but different thread pitch so I sent my full to Briley to have them make skeet and skeet 2 ( lite mod).
Top barrel measured . 668 bottom .669 IC measured .010 mod .017 full .030
Hope this helps and people buy one! Don’t want them to stop production after first run.

Like browning did several times!!

Good report Ate Up. Thanks. Good to know Brley can make the chokes.

What do you think of the overall quality? Grade of the wood? Fit and finish? Can you post pics?

I talked to Truchoke. Carlson’s and Briley about chokes for the new Franchi 16.
Only Briley is interesting edged in making some chokes! Both Truchoke and Carlson’s blew me off saying that there won’t be any volume and they’re not interested. Good to know, I won’t be buying any more of their chokes.

Glad to hear the new gun is a winner. Can’t wait for my order to arrive!

Mike:

A lot of us come to KS and OK to run dogs. This year was a little light in birds because of last spring and summer storms, but, we found some quail to keep the dogs happy. I think we spent more time taking some pictures than we did taking any birds! The covey’s were pretty small and too many hunters after them.

I’m new to the 16, a Friend talked me into trying his, really nice! So I’ve bought one and ordered one for late season birds, kind of hard to put the 28 away during early season!

Thanks!

Ron
