Lemme see here . . . in 16's I have 3 Model 12's, one Czech hammer double, one A-5, and one Fox Sterlingworth . . . Wow, I never counted them before . . . woops, also two single-shots. By the way, all the guns were originally short chambered for 2 9/16 or 65mm shells, except one of the Model 12's, and one of the single-shots, which has a 3" chamber. One of the short-chambered Model 12's and the Sterlingworth have been through Mike Orlen's shop for 2 3/4 inch chambers, long forcing cones and choke work.
Do I need more 16's? No. But orphan guns still tug at my heart and I can't say I won't ever give in. To round out the stable, I'd like to have a Darne, a Manufrance Ideal, and a good SLE. Notice I said "and",not "or".
Cheers!

Two, because you never know what is going to happen to one. One crash can break a stock, or a firing pin might break, or whatever. Beyond the required pair, well the rest are just there to keep them company. It would be a shame to let one of them get lonely in the safe. Of course as a responsibility, however many 16's there are, they all need to be "exercised" periodically so they don't die of boredom. |

Hey Old Colonel -- Not to hijack your thread, but you mentioned a superlight 24 gauge. What manufacturer and model is it? Barrel length? Chamber length? Mine is a Beretta 686 -- too modern. I wish I had a SxS 24 ga. I passed one up a long time ago -- a Belgian gun if I recall correctly -- and I still regret it.
Thanks,
Tony |

My 24ga is a plain jane BLNE. It is a Pouly & Merley Andrézieux - (French Guild Gun equivalent), 2 1/2 chambers, 27 in barrels, choked .018 & .019, 5lbs 2oz, near 100% case, blue, and refinished wood. I purchased it from a poster on doublegun.com. It is a sweet little gun which I went 7 preserve quail for eleven shells this last week with 3/4oz reloads. I have both regular plastic hulls from BPI and 30 RMC brass cases.
If you want my plastic hull 24ga reloading data I can share with you what I have found so far. |

Right now what makes sense to me (forever evolving) is to have a couple classic 16's choked just a little differently for the birds I hunt (pheasants & grouse/woodcock) and another I don't mind getting wet hunting ducks (A5), and one more that can take a bit more regular use shooting clays. My answer is 4. |

Old Colonel,
Thanks for the offer of your 24 gauge reloading data. Sure I'll take it -- send it to me by PM on this site if you can. I will also reciprocate with my data if you like, but I can't right now because all my stuff is packed up for a house sale and move, and I can't easily get to it for a while. I use a 3/4 oz. load for clays, 7/8 oz. load for prairie upland birds, and have also loaded a 1 ouncer -- all use Longshot, and I think I have one 3/4 ouncer using Blue Dot. The Longshot loads are of my own concoction extrapolated from 28 and 20 gauge Longshot loads -- no pressure tests, but I have the velocities. I apologize to the rest of you for polluting this thread with talk of other gauges.
Cheers!

A perfect description of me. I had as many as many as 27 shotguns and as few as two. None worth more that two thousand dollars. I get mad when I don't shoot well and get sellers remorse when I sell some. RB |

Need is perhaps not the right sentiment. How many should we own? As many as we will actually use. |
