Does anyone remember seeing cardboard shot cups being made from old cereal boxes? When I was a kid, my great uncle made cups for his shot shells and won many turkey shoots with his unique loads. There was also some cream of wheat and flour in the cup with the shot. 1960s time frame. We never tossed an empty cereal box. We also looked for discarded hard packs from cigarettes (Camel & Marlboro preferred) which became his overshot cards.

I still make overshot wads from thin cardboard wrappers.

I can remember when my Dad was operating the trap club at Weston, Mo in the 60's and at the end of the day we picked up any unbroken targets from the field and any WAA12 wads for him to use in his own loads.
A few years later when another man was running the club my brother and I spent our Sunday afternoons in the traphouse loading targets(early 70's)

Back in my college days I frequently reused wads to save what little money I had. It didn't hurt that the "shooting range" was below the barn and well grazed. When I got bored (out of ammo) I would go pick up wads.

The things we lose when we are overtaken by technology- and cereal box wads are just the tip of the iceberg.

My uncle's father told us that during WWII, when no ammo was available, he reloaded his own shells. He had black powder but had to improvise the rest. He disassembled his primers and inserted a toy pistol cap inside and stuck them back together. Then he punched wads out of sheets of cork insulation and other such materials. He had no shot but had lead sheets from old roofing material. He took a paper punch and punched out circles of lead which he would roll into semi round "pellets" with his fingers. He said about 1/3 of the shells failed to fire but 2/3 of the shells worked and killed ducks. Better than nothing.

I'd recommend against making shot cups and wads from Kix cereal boxes because, you know..

Wasn't puffed wheat shot out of a gun?

For reused plastic wads IN GOOD CONDITION I'd go with a modest load per your usual recipe, or get one of the generic loads from the tables. Wads that are sunburnt and weathered are brittle. If you can twist off the petals they're DEAD Jim!

For home made shot cups over cushion wads consider the wrapper as occupying the space of about 1/8 oz of fine (7.5,8.or 9) shot.

We do this for economy so keep everything modest and conventional. I use my standard claybird loads which are pretty modest to start with. My usual powder at present is Green Dot. For hunting or serious competition I use new components and load per the tables.

Good reminder there pumpgun, will avoid using Kix.

Builder, yes the puffed wheat was shot from big guns, cannons actually. The Quaker Oats building in my home town, Akron, has some of those "guns" on display. Rolled oats make a good shot buffer...

Carlos, I have used a light load of Unique with over powder cards, fiber wads, and a cardboard shot cup/wrap under a roll crimp. It is the only one I know but have no pressure data.

I still remember my go to load during college summers. It was 12 ga. though. Basically any light load with moderate pressure works fine, but the cushion section of the wad remains slightly collapsed so a little filler is sometimes needed. I never could tell the difference when shooting clays if I was using a new wad or a recycled wad when the shells often got mixed together.

And Cheerios makes a good filler to make your crimp look good.
