I feel compelled to share a bit of the late Jack O'Connor's rifle wisdom -
If a man were to own but two rifles, one should be chambered in .270 Winchester, and the other chambered in .375 Holland & Holland Magnum.
If a man were to own but one rifle, it should be chambered in .375 Holland & Holland Magnum. |

Yep .257 Roberts an unsung hero close second 7 x 57 Mauser. Love em both have /had both but gave my 7mm to my son when he shot his first buck with it at 11 years old! Replaced it with a 7mm-08.

I have some familiarity with the .257 Roberts.
But to be honest I think of it more as a coterminous favorite of the previous generation of rifle shooters - and as a point of relevance I am 70.
I haven't seen a rifle chambered in .257 Roberts, nor a box of .257 Roberts ammunition on a shelf in decades.
Excellent cartridge though. |

Funny you said that about not seeing any .257 Roberts ammo. This summer our local Scheels had about 50 boxes of 7x57, 50 boxes of 6.5x55 Swede and 20 boxes of .257 Roberts on the shelf and not much else. There was a sign saying the 6.5x55 would not work in the 6.5 Creedmoor. I bought a couple boxes of the .257 Roberts for about $25 per box. I would have bought more but they limited you to two boxes. |

.257 Roberts, drop the mic. I personally like the "road less traveled" in both shotguns and rifles, and I've been shooting .257 Roberts since my grandfather taught me to shoot a centerfire rifle about 45 years ago. In fact, I just killed a deer with my Remington 722 in .257 last Sunday. |

My long gone 2nd cousin Maury would fit in here. He shot a 16-gauge Parker Bros. GHE and a Winchester Model 70 in .257 Roberts. |

Well, if less traveled is the notion, how ‘bout the .257 Roberts Ackley Improved? One of, if not the best of the AI cartridges.
Best,

Cheezy I don't think that is my quote! I rotate rifles through every year out of the safe. I shot a deer last year with my Roberts 100 grn Speer Soft Point didn't bounce off.
It still works even though I have newer "better" cartridges |

Yeah, thats what I get for replying on my phone. Was trying to delete it down to the pertinent stuff and didn't go far enough, then botched all the code up, had your quote in Bill's quote. Sorry about that. |

I live in Massachusetts and we don't have such places as Scheels, the ammo shelves in our local gun shops are like the 'white elephant table' at a church sale. Even Bass Pro Shop and Cabela's are sadly lacking inventory.
The ammo shortage is so bad up our way that some shooters have individual boxes of their personal sporting ammo up on consignment. All this non-sense seems to curiously coincide with Democratic Presidential administrations - although I hate to mix politics and fun together. |
