Does anyone know how old these are? Someone gave them to me, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that they’re 2 9/16” paper, roll crimped shells. They cycled fine in my circa 1911 Auto-5.
Also, if anyone has a reloading recipe, that would be appreciated, as there’s nothing in Lyman’s 5th. Components on hand include SG16 and SP16 wads, Cheddite and Remington 209 primers, and PB (soon to be replaced with Universal) powder.
Thanks! |

Nope -- get out the calculator:
65 mm = 2.599", .004" less than 2 9/16" = 2.563"
67 mm = 2.638", .013" greater than 2 5/8" = 2.625"
70 mm = 2.756", .006" greater than 2 3/4" = 2.750"
75 mm = 2.953", .043 short of 3" = 3.000"
Rudolph, I believe those Super-X's you show are from the '50's, maybe as early as the late '40's. The SuperSpeed box pictured by skeetx is pre WW2 I believe. |

Thank you. That leads to the question, is it possible they were loaded with corrosive primers? |

Your box states " non-corrosive primers". |

Well, DUH!
Thank you, J.
Also, I found these recipes:
Winchester X-pert 1 oz PB 19.5 Fed 209A WAA16 1250 11,200 Hodgdon 2009
Winchester X-pert 1 oz PB 21.0 Rem 209P Rem SP16 1250 10,800 Hodgdon 2009
Not sure if Winchester hulls are the same as Western, but I’m going to try it. |

Those loads are for plastic straight walled 2 3/4 " hulls . Because those loads are near max pressure I personally wouldn't load them in those paper hulls . They probably won't fit anyway . |

I did some testing today. To measure capacity I filled three 65mm hulls with #8 shot. A paper Cheddite held 78.3g, a Plastic (cut down) Cheddite held 81.3g, and the Xpert 72.1. In ounces that’s 2.76, 2.87, and 2.54.
The ID of the Cheddites was 18mm, the Xpert 17mm. Depth of the Cheddites was 56mm, the Xpert 52mm, but the base wad has a DEEP primer pocket of around 6mm.
So obviously very different dimensions. But just to see, I loaded 2 shells with 20gn of PB and 1 oz of #8. I had to trim the petals of the R16 wads but both loaded fine, even the one with the Spreader device.
Incidentally, I cut open one of the hulls and test fit the wads. The SG16 was a perfect fit, the R16 was a little loose. But I used the Remington wad per the recipe.
Not planning on shooting those reloads, but I like the paper hulls over cut down plastic. If anyone can come up with a recipe...
