I started shooting sporting clays 6 months or so ago and have been reloading 12 and 28 gauge. I recently ended up with my dads model 12 in 16 ga and I’ve found I do just as good with It as my new Ceasar Guerini. And in the sub gage shoot I get 4 extra birds for using 16 ga and a pump.

So I’ve been saving my Herters hulls and want to start reloading them also. I have a PW 375 and plan on buying the 16 ga dies. I also have some universal powder and cheditte primers.

Any suggestion on what wad to use and where to buy? I plan on using 1 oz of shot as that’s what I’ve been using and it’s been fine. But I may also try 7/8 if it works as well.

Join the 16ga group on Yahoo ,then go to 'files' and download "16 ga load revise"and also 'powders'. more recipes than you ever thought you might need.

16's usually need a more magnum/slower burning powder than for 12s. 700x for lighter loads, Blue Dot Dot heavier loads. But there are 150 powders out there.

Herters are reloadable. They are Cheddites.

Look on the Hodgdon website. They have a data for Cheddite hulls and Universal with 1 oz. loads.

Thanks, I ordered some claybuster and sg16 wads from ballistic products to try out.

Now all I need is some 16 ga dies for the pw375.

DMC-beware of using universal powder in a Fed or cheddite case with the claybuster aa16 wad. I got bad bloopers so switched to the 072sg16 wad and its much better.

I've been using the SG-16 wad in Cheddite hulls, Cheddite primers and Universal powder, with 1 ounce of various shot. The published load I used for 1200 fps only chronographed out at 1165, so I bumped up the powder for 1200 fps. Still under another published load on the powder charge, so no concern about overload.

So what powder should I use with the cheddite hull and claybuster wads? I’ve got 500 coming.

What powders have you got? Maybe something for 1 1/8 12 ga? Or a 20ga powder? Look them up in the spreadsheet.

Bloopers are caused by not enough slow burning powder that is hard to light. More powder taking up space in the hull means higher pressure and temperature, getting it lit off. Have you noticed that some powders need more to get a 1oz load to the same FPS as they get from 1 1/8 load with less powder?

Different wads also take up more/less space. And CF hulls have less to begin with, that is one of the traits allowed for in AA wad design. Not just the inner diameter of the tapered walls. but volume too.

Ideal world we would each have a dozen different powders in stock, one for each load in each gauge.

Savage16, were your loads from a published recipe? Were they the light load for the options?

Frinstance, 19gr Green Dot worked OK, the occasional blooper got blamed on the press, or the guy pumping it. Wink 18gr made 50% bloopers. I'm trying 20 at the trap range tommorrow.

He is probably talking about bloopers caused by powder migration because the claybuster wads are a loose fit in the straight walled hulls

Published load? That's all I'll do. But just because a load is published, even by someone like Hodgdon, doesn't mean its a great load. I've found that out with 20ga loads too. At least in this case, it wasn't about the amount of powder; rather the problem is the fit of the aa16 wad being too loose and allowing powder to migrate forward while bouncing around in a pocket while out hunting. Verified by holding a round up to brite light and seeing the flakes up along side of the wad.

DMC, hopefully someone else will correct me if I don't say the following right. The consensus here has come to that the aa16 claybuster wads work best in Remington RGL or express hulls (or the old Win compression formed if you've won the hull lottery). The DR16 works best in Fed or cheddite hulls for 3/4 oz or 7/8. For 1oz in cheddite or Fed hulls, use the SG16. Quite awhile ago, it seems someone here had said that claybuster was looking at making the AA16 slightly bigger, but I don't remember hearing its happened. Good luck.

To make a blooper by flakes of powder getting past the wad, you would need so little left behind that your load would be below the minimum load for that powder. I just looked at the 'wads' spreadsheet. AA16 is listed for 300 loads in straight walled cases. Almost all listings were from published books- powder companies or Lyman. WAAAAAaay too many of use use the loads of AA type wads in straight sided hulls for a few flakes escaping to be the problem.

In the other hand, not enough shot/wad/powder to take up the space inside the hull will make a blooper. "Not a great load" is exactly what I said, we agree.

I'm sure more people here have stories to tell- how about pressure tested loads of AA style wads in straight walled hulls? How erratic were they?

casebro , apparently you have never experienced this before . If load them and take right to range and shoot them may never be a problem . But if carry the in you pocket or ride them in the truck long enough , enough powder can migrate past the over powder wad to cause bloopers.

For 16ga Waa wads are not ideal is straight walled hulls . Unless you use tight seal or some people use plastic wrap or an os card under the wad against the powder it can be a big problem .
