If such an animal exists, I would like a 7/8oz load using 2 1/2 in RST empties, PB (I still have 1 1/2 LB) Win 209, and BP sporting 16 wads, 1150-1200fps is my target vel. I loaded up 10 with these ingredients and 18gr OF PB last night but having 2nd thoughts on shooting them. I use that charge in RGL with DR16 and it's great but I realize that this is quite a component change. Help would be appreciated. Thanks

You will be just fine , you may have to bump up the PB charge a little to get the velocity you want .

look at this

Thanks, that was very informative. I will try these out, maybe shoot them over the chronograph I have and adjust accordingly. Not even close to max pressure. He only used 17 gr, but 18 shouldn't get me into trouble. Is SG 16 wad the same one I used?

The new SG16 Short wad (SG16S) from BPI is ideal for 2 1/2” loads. It takes up less space in the hull than the original SG16 and leaves more room for shot.

Won't need the short wad for that load , the stack height is perfect.

Chronyed that load today, shot 7 or 8 over the chrony. Got 1 at 1250fps, 1at 1225fps, then when I backed up 2 steps, the last few were around 1150ish. I don't know how far the gasses go when shot, I've heard of chronographing those and not the load. That could have been what was happening I think this is fine. A man can drive himself nuts over this kind of stuff. Don't think the birds will know Very Happy

My guess 1150 is what you would get with 18grs

T bird, Does your chrono's manual specify a distance from front screen to muzzle? My Caldwell specifies 5ft for shotgun

Savage, I haven't seen my manual in years. don't chrono shotshell loads that often, but I can say that all shots were further than 5 ft away- more like 10-12.

I joined the Yahoo 16ga group the other day ( And had to get an Office 365 trial membership to view the files) and saw some perplexing data. The table differentiated between RST Cheddite shells and regular 21/2 in Cheddite. Is there a difference? They have 17 gr Universal in an RST hull with SG16 wad yielding 1250 fps at 8000psi, and 19.9 gr Universal in regular 21/2 in Cheddite yielding 1150 fps at 7500 psi, same wad. Thats a real difference. I have both hulls and was using them interchangeably.

Tbird, that is a big difference. Is it a 1 oz recipe?

No, these are 7/8 oz loads. The source for the 17gr universal, 1250 fps load is this forum. It is designated that it is a folded crimp. The source for the 19.9 gr load is Hodgdon no crimp is listed. The thing I found odd (other than the numbers) is that the 2 hulls were listed separately as tho there was a difference. These loads are listed at the bottom of the 2.5 in hull spreadsheet.
