Went after some woodcock tonight in central MI. Our area has plenty of cocks to hunt, but the grouse population is VERY low. My dad, my dog, and I walked through a local "old faithful", getting EATEN ALIVE by mosquitos, to flush zero woodcock and one grouse (which obviously flushed when my dad was crawling through brush and I couldn't have stood up if I had to). Overall, successful hunt, because we were in the woods doing what we loved. HOWEVER, I suspect I wont be back in the woods until the mosquitos go away. Any midwest hunters with heavy game bags?

I have been using this product lately on me and the dogs and have been surprisingly happy with the results. Is a bit oily but smells nice and keeps the bugs off.
Kept the flies off the dogs ears too.

Montcalm County MI...[long pause with a faraway look]...are they still pulling those giant browns out of Fish Creek like it was back in the day?

And don’t sweat the mosquitos, you won’t notice them if you are there when the woodcock flights swarm through the river bottoms, just don’t miss out because they don’t linger more than a day or two, then they are gone.
Enjoy,

B.

Kind of funny you mention Fish Creek. Yes, still full of big browns, I have one at the taxidermist right now. 21.5" brown out of a 15 foot wide creek. I know people with much bigger browns from fish creek, but I was so excited for that one that I had to mount it.

We don't hunt them at night. Normal shooting hours only. I reread my initial post and assume you're asking this because I said the word "tonight"?

Gentlemen,

Hunting Grouse at Dusk is very challenging and rewarding, Fly Fishing for Trout till 2 1/2 hrs after dark is great fishing.

Yes, that was why I asked. I assume you meant afternoon?

Thanks, SRH

We had a spotty frost Friday night and thankfully it knocked back our mosquitos. I spent the last two mornings hunting ducks in the Mississippi River bottoms and didn't see a single mosquito. (Limited on woodies both days.)

Wonderful to hear they are still out there. Nothing against floating these big mountain Western rivers out here for rainbows and steelhead, but there’s magic in rolling a massive brown in a quiet little pool in the woods.

Leave a few for us in case we ever get back there again...someday...
