New wadsheet from Precision.
https://www.precisionreloading.com/docs/uploads/TUWSBL1627%20Load%20Data%20-%20Website.pdf

There are 17 loads of 15/16 or 1oz. However, they're all terribly slow, and too slow really for me to use for ducks. Maybe target, but then I'd just be using 7/8. However it's nice they published something.

The best of these heavier loads they have is in a cheddite hull, still only 1363fps:

That is truly disappointing to me.

Most of those loads remind me of the lousy steel loads from the 1970s.

There has got to be a better one possible.

Quit complaining about some loading data that does not do what you want! Be glad that Precision Reloading is publishing some 16 ga tested data. Also nice to know that they offer the TUWSBL1627 non toxic wad that is pre-slit. That should make somebody happy!

For a reference point, I recently ran 3 Federal 15/16 oz steel over the chrono and got 1303,1266,1304.

A lot of ducks and geese have died to "slow" ammo just because they weren't smart enough to know better. The 10 ga. load I go to when the chips are down is actually pretty slow by current perceptions, but I have yet to see any other steel load match it at ranges where it would actually matter. With a 16 ga. I am shooting birds at nowhere near the ranges that thing will.

Why? If you do not like my complaint, do not read it.

It is truly disappointing to see new wads developed and introduced to the market and then when the loading recipes are published for that wad, they have velocities that were state of the art 40 years ago when steel shot was in its infancy and performed so poorly. I do not understand the point of some of those loads.

You are correct though that this information is worth having and some of those loads are useful.

I destroyed the B&P16 gauge wads when I tried to load similar recipes as I shoot with the VP80/MM16 wads.
Maybe some of the Experts on here can tell me why they got destroyed.

Destroyed while loading or after shooting? Can you describe the destruction please?

16 GAwaterfowler,

If you list the components of each, I will probably be able to help.

John Singer,

The limitation of steel load velocities have nothing to do with wads. The powder is the limitation.

I have to be honest, I believed that Steel powder would have given better velocities than it did. Back in the 1990's I developed a 1 oz. steel 16 gauge load using Steel powder, a plastic gas seal and a mylar wrapper that went 1490 FPS @ 11,000 PSI. It used 30 plus grains of Steel powder, which is quite a departure from what Precision's data offers. I would love to ask Precision to run the Steel powder up to 30.0 grains just to see if there is a possibility of there being an issue with small amounts of Steel powder and this wad. With an actual wad like the one in question I would think that 1,400 FPS or so would be the upper limit for a 1 oz. steel load in the 16.

The steel wad that Precision has offered is a wad probably made by Bascheri & Pellagri or Gualandi. This is not a specially designed wad made by Precision.

Upon recovery of fired wads, they were burned, had pinholes in them and some had shot embedded in the base, I have a picture but I can't seem to post up on this website.
I don't really need any help with it , I know the loads were going way overpressure with the B&P wads. My opinion for what it's worth is the B&P wads are not that sturdy and not meant for fast steel loads when you compare them to the VP80/MM16 wad.

Sorry for delay, was fishing and hunting all weekend...

Thanks for clarifying, got it; don't need help. Best of luck with it.

Just wondering: Can it be assumed that Precision Reloading used new unfired hulls to arrive at the results published ?
