Well friends, as someone noticed, I have been absent. The reason is worthwhile and compelling, an adventure of a lifetime. Back when I was 17 years of age I learned of a bird known as the Himalayan Snowcock. I planned to finally hunt them this past September but a series of disasters and tragedies conspired to put that to a halt. In late October, I made a phone inquiry concerning the snowpack in the Ruby Mtns. of Nevada, where this magnificent bird resides, at least on our continent. The snow was minimal for the time of year, so I backed the 1979 F150 up to the camper and went.

There have been difficulties along the journey, but no matter, I met this bird in the wildest terrain and will never forget. Not only that, how many people have photos of their dog retrieving the ultimate upland bird? That alone turned into a 20 minute task.

There of course is much more to the story and I will continue it in more detail soon, but right now I am so tired my fingers are not hitting the keyboard with much accuracy (much correcting going on here), so I will post a few pics as a teaser. Yes, a purple hull is involved. To be continued...

You da Man, and that goes for Rusty too. I hunted mule deer in the Ruby mountains in Nevada back in the 1980's, are there Ruby mountains in Wyoming too?

You ARE The Man.
And you did it the right way: purple hulls, side-by-side, loyal dog, and climbing mountains to get there.

Congratulations!

I get nosebleed looking at the altitude those birds are at. Rusty must be part Sherpa. Great job; can't wait for the account. You get a gold medal for keeping a 40 year-old truck on the road. Gil

Gil, the truck actually failed on me for the first time during this trip. Coil failure. It was an Accel coil, not a Ford part. After finally figuring out what was wrong, I dug the original 1979 Ford coil out from under there seat (kept there on advice from another friend who knows a wrench or two), wired up the original horseshoe connector, installed the coil and we were back in business. Those old Ford coils last forever. The aftermarket junker was an attempt at better mpg, one that made no difference anyway. It now resides in a trash can.

One of the last of the shadytree mechanic-repairable trucks on the road. Points; coil, plugs and carburetor. Not a chip in the vehicle unless you spilled a Golden Flake on the floorboard that Rusty didn't find. Well, maybe the radio...Gil

Not quite Gil, but close. By 1973 Ford was running electronic ignition in the trucks. Then there is the matter of those plasma arc lights on the bumper that I set to trigger automatically with the high beam circuit so deer can live long enough find that bullet or arrow they are searching for later! But what would you expect from a 79 hiding behind a 76 grille? She's had some elective surgery...
