I am looking to purchase a 16 sxs. I hunt upland.
Looking for something that isn’t heavy or super long
I have an honest budget unfortunately.
Is there a quality sxs under $600 to be had? If so any wisdom is appreciated!!!

Ithaca's Lefever Nitro Special if looking for an older gun in that price range. Newer, perhaps a used CZ but I'm not certain you'd find one for under $600.

You get what you pay for and a quality doublegun doesn't come cheap.

Yeah I figured that was the case. I’m not opposed to saving up I just want to have a good idea of what to get and price ranges.
Thanks for the input !

In my opinion, you won’t find a decent SXS for $600, or close to that.

Doubling+ your target price will get you in to the range of much better guns.

FAIR's Iside seems to be the darling of the moment. Several members here have them or have them on order. Very positive reviews, many of which you can find here.

The Turkish Dickinsons are another option. Overall, they have a good following with a few reports of issues. Mainly heavy triggers.

Several "classics" can be had for $1200 or less. Ithaca NIDs and LC Smiths can be found in good condition for less than $1200. Possibly a Fox Sterlingworth. The classics have their own set of disclaimers.

A quick search for French or German ‘guild’ guns might find something in that price range. A robust field grade would be $800-1000. NID Ithaca is a good option, but $600 is a bit low for a decent sxs.

If you can live with vertical stacked barrels, the marlin 90 can be had at~$500 give or take. Solid shooting gun, and double triggers are the usual set up.

The Fox Model B should be under $600, handling is not as smooth as the above, but a solid gun and usually point better than the Stevens 311 type guns.

The Lefever Nitro Special always comes to mind. If you don't mind a little finish wear and a few nicks on the stock, the L.C. Smith field grade, Ithaca N.I.D. field grade, and Fox Sterlingworth can all be found for around $600 if you are patient with your search. These last three are usually a little bit lighter than the Nitro Special. All four are well made guns and handle nicely.

The Ithaca Flues model fills the gap between the N.I.D. and the Nitro Special (which was made by Ithaca) and can often be purchased within your budget as well and tend to run close to 7 lbs.

My Fox, L.C. Smith, and Ithaca N.I.D. 16's all came in between 6 lbs. 8 oz. and 6 lbs. 10 0z. I paid between $500 and $685 for them in the past few years. All have a little wear, but I hunt with my 16's continually, so some of that wear is is my own anyway.

There are a variety of foreign "guild" guns on the market and these are usually light weight and well made. I occasionally see one at a bargain price. Others here can relate more expertise concerning these guns.

One thing to keep in mind with the above list, many of these guns will have shorter 2 9/16" chambers rather than 2 3/4" depending on manufacture date. Lengthening the chambers (and forcing cones while you're at it) isn't too much trouble in most cases. RST makes ammo made for these shorter chambers as well. Reloading opens up a tremendous number of options. Many old guns have already been converted to 2 3/4". Have the gun measured to verify chamber length.

I paid $450.00 for my 1921 Ithaca Flues on Gunbroker. It weighs in at 6 lbs. 7 oz. and handles like a dream.
