Ran out of my Herco powder and have a few Lbs of Longshot on the shelf acquired in a trade. I use the Herco in my favorite Trap load, RGL, 1oz lead, SP16, med primer and it works great. Looking for input on Longshot for the same app. Found some recipes for it so, does it; Meter well? Burn clean? Work well under 1oz in an RGL?

Any input appreciated, thanks...

I thought LS was more of a hunting load powder. I use it in four gauges including 16 ga, for hunting loads.
Maybe others can chime in and help.

I use it for 1 1/8 oz pheasant loads , but not anything lighter. I see several loads for 1 oz but I use Universal for that. Longshot meters fine, leaves a bit of residue in the barrel on my heavy loads so I'd imagine lighter loads will be worse. I'm not pushing those heavy loads to 1300 fps, more like 1240 so that may contribute to the residue.

Longshot is my Go To powder for 1 1/8 oz Skeet and Trap loads.

Appreciate the input, figured it was more of a heavy lifting powder. Since no replies in the "no way" category. I'll load up a couple boxes and see how they run out. Going to start with the one in the spread sheets; RGL, W209, 22LS, SP16, 1oz, fold, 1250/8900.

Thanks for the input,

I regularly use Longshot, My go to, is 25.5 grains behind a fiber wad and one ounce of shot out of an RMC brass hull.

Loading the Longshot / RGL / Win209 / WAA16 / 1oz recipe from the tables / Hodgdon and so far so good. Granted I'm early in my reloading adventure compared to many among us. My 1 oz bushing throws just shy of the full ounce but I'm fine with that and my '47 Auto 5 seems to be as well.

It's a superb powder for 1 1/8 oz loads but it leaks like water. With RGL hulls you shouldn't have a problem, but if you use Cheddite/ Herter's, Fed, non CF Winchester, or Fiocchi hulls watch out! Careful wad selection is needed or the stuff leaks past the wad seal.

Again, thanks! Good stuff, all adding to the confidence. Leaking, Noted; I've read about the possible LS leak penchant so figure using the SP16 in the RGL hull should be good to go. Need to put my 4 lines of winter league flight placement in soon so now have good reason to go to the club and burn some powder, here twist my arm. Very Happy

I have experimented with using a nitro card or overshot card under the SP 16 wad in the clear plastic cheditte hull and found both were effective at eliminating powder migration.

For shells that are loaded and directly go to the skeet field and are shot in short order I do not worry about powder migration. For hunting loads that may get a lot of carry before shooting I do concern myself and use a overshot card under the wad or most frequently just go the nitro card and fiber wad and don’t use plastic wads on hunting loads much.
