Cabelas has many different loads on sale with free shipping over $50. Some are 16ga loads.

For whatever reason the single boxes work out cheaper then the price of a flat. I just ordered 10 boxes of 20 gauge for $4.88 a box. Added 1 box of 12 ga 1 1/4 oz #5s at $5.88 to get the free shipping. Those are great prices. Looks like a fire sale clearing the shelves before discontinuing.

Went to Cabelas today. I did buy 4 flats of Herters 16ga 1oz #8 for $48.80 a flat, everything they had. Again, you'll never see $4.88 a box for 16ga skeet/dove loads again... everyone else's there was $16 or more.

The flat price was actually $55, but the individual boxes were marked $4.88. At the cash register, she told me she had to open the flats and ring all the boxes up individually due to inventory/sku issues... I was like, "OK! SWEET, save $6 a flat!". She just pulled 1 box, rang it at $4.88 and did X10, Boom!

They were inventorying all the ammo, and all 3 guys there did confirm that they are closing out the Herters line and won't be getting more. That really sucks for 16ga as there are not any other cheap options and the Herters 16ga I feel really was a help for guys that wanted to shoot the gauge for skeet etc. So I think I now have 7 or 8 flats of the 1oz #8, as I don't want to have to reload 16ga for skeet.

Maybe Midway or some other dealer will take on the Cheddite entry level line of shells and keep us supplied.

Midway or whoever can rename it as long as they keep the affordable loadings coming. The Herter's name doesn't matter to the targets... Smile

Maybe we should approach Midway with the idea. Never know!

Well, looking at the Midway website, I see that Larrys first shotgun he got was at Christmas when he was 13. It was a Stevens single shot. Guess what gauge. Wink

I sent the following email to Larry

Hello Sir:

Thank you for your service to our country.

I was a Missile Launch Officer at Malmstrom AFB, Montana.

It seems that Cabela’s has discontinued their Herter’s Brand

16 gauge ammo, and maybe all Herter’s ammo.

I figure they own the Herter’s brand name, but the ammo was Cheddite.

Is there any possibility of Midway championing a low cost brand of 16 ammo for use in clays and dove/quail efforts?

Thank you.

Respectfully

Michael Lowrey

If maybe the rest of y'all would do likewise, we might gain some headway Smile

If he goes for it lets ask him to keep the purple hulls.

Quite true and very disappointing. The Herters brand was a brief flash of relief for 16ga shooters, but it could not forestall the inevitable, i.e., the disappearance of the 16ga as an affordable everyday all purpose field gun.

One only needs to stroll the aisles at Wally's, or search the web, to find that 16ga ammo is 50% to 100% more costly than 12 and 20 gauge ammo. The message is clear: The 16 is on its way off the stage, and as a very wise friend once advised me, "Don't stand in front of the steamroller."

It's time to turn the page and enjoy the 16ga for what it is today, a specialty item with wonderful unique advantages, albeit with the attendant costs for said advantages.

It is heartening to see the emergence of innovative new 16ga ammo suppliers like Polywad and RST, as well as a solid range of reloading components. We are far from the point that we must rely on DIY components and collectable relics to pursue our sport, and to state the obvious, there is still much to enjoy with things as they are.
