When I started reloading shells for 16ga, I began using RGL. I finally got my Mec 600Jr adjusted so I was getting good crimps and was happy. Then I decided I wanted to load 2.5 in shells so I could feed my Elsie with short chambers (yes I'm aware that you can shoot 2/34 in shells in it). I bought a short kit, got my loader adjusted to load 2.5" shells and that's all I've loaded for the past year or so. I load cheddite hull, Win 209, SG 16 and 7/8 oz and I've got the loader adjusted PERFECT. I took the short kit off the other day and just to see, I put an RGL in and cycled it to see how much adjusting would be necessary when I wanted to load some of those. The adjustment wasn't close. I then tried a once fired Fiocchi with SG 16 and 1oz shot, the adjustment would have to be altered very little to make that work. Since I'm trying to simplify my life, I decided to use Fiocchi for 1oz loads, and 2.5 cheddite for 7/8. The SgpG 16 will work for as far as height goes, but a good bit of the load isn't in the shot cup. Does that matter? Also, I have about 1000 CB WAA 16 clones that I loaded in the RGLs with 1oz loads. These measure smaller than the SG 16, but are they too small for the Fiocchi? I would like to use them up, but don't want to deal with squib loads. Any advice for wads for 1 oz loads in Fiocchi hulls would be appreciated. The powder I will be using, at least for a while, is PB. |

Easiest to do is set up one press for 2 3/4 and one press for 2 1/2 and never look back

Try the SG16S wad which allows 1oz loads to fit comfortably in 2 1/2 Cheddite hulls which are very similar in capacity to Fio hulls. The photo shows the headroom with the SG16, the Z-16, and the SG16S with 20.5 gr 800X in 2 1/2 Cheddite hulls. There is 7.8mm space with the SG16S (SH) vs 4.1mm in the SG16 (SG) with 1 oz.

Yeah, I get that Mike!. O'm outt'a room on my bench for another press. I have a Hornady 366 in 12 ga sitting next to this Mec. As well as a Lee Turret press for pistol, rifle loads, on the other side. I don't I'm gonna shoot 12 much any more, but I don't think Hornady makes 16 gauge attachments for the 366. As to the other comments, I don't need help loading 21/2 in shells, I need to know what are good wads for 1oz loads in 2 3/4 in Fiocchi hulls, and can I use the CB WAA16 clone even tho It's slightly smaller without powder migration with PB, or is there a better wad. Thought I was clear- sorry. |

Thanks, now I understand your post. If I may inquire, is there a particular reason you wish to reload 2 3/4 Fio hulls instead of cutting them down to 2 1/2 for 1 oz loads? The reason I ask is that our member BYRDOG produces an ingenious little case trimmer with which one can shorten hundreds of cases in well under an hour with little effort and at very modest cost.

I had it in my mind that I would load 2 3/4 in for 1 oz loads and 2 1/2 for 7/8 oz for easy sight recognition. But I guess I don't have to. I have some Fiocci hulls and ordered a few more new primed, I would like to use those. I guess It would be easier to just develop a 2 1/2 in 1 oz load. And Mike, the first thing I did a few years ago was look for 366 16 gauge dies I didn't see any and didn't know they EVER made any. |

Been thinking- now I'm hijaching my own thread, I just might see if I can get one of those case cutters from Byrddog and cut down the Fiocchi. Can I use the same SG 16 wad for 1oz loads in 2 1/2 in shells? |

You could try but its a very tight squeeze with the SG16. My 2 1/2 Cheddite crimps with the SG16 pop open after a week or two, but your new Fio hulls might hold, so its worth a try. The SG16S is vastly preferable however.
The Byrdog trimmer is an indispensable accessory for 16ers.
Good Luck

About BD's trimmer ... I think I've done 50K cases with it on the original blade - still ticking !! Don't use a drill , easy enough to just turn by hand . 28's thru 10's on the one trimmer ! |
