Hey folks,
Came into a random collection of old(er) 16ga shells over the weekend, wondering if the Winchester Boxes in the photo below (back right corner) should be the older compression hulls?
Apologies for the group photo - could have have sworn I took a pic of just one of the shells from the box for this purpose but apparently not the case. If can't tell for certain just from box I'll try and get a shell pic posted later this evening.
Edit - one of these days I'll figure out how to get pics posted on the first try....seems so recent that I used to be able to consider myself fairly good at this computering thing...

Should be compression formed. Hull should not be ribbed and have 8 point crimp. A pic of hull will help. |

Some really neat stuff for sure. Wish the boxes on the Imperial and Cancuks were in a bit better shape, but still fun to see and learn about.
Not even sure what I'd shoot most of that at - majority of it is 4's, 2's, BB, and slugs...
The old man did a lot of jackrabbit hunting growing up in Ontario with an 870 in 16ga.
The Ziploc and at least one of those other boxes and a few old crown royal bags of shells not picture are just a random mishmash, looking forward to sitting down and going through it all.
Funny part was seeing the price tags on some of the boxes, 3 and 4 dollars (Canadian) |

I have three boxes of those Win shells in upper right. Mine are compression formed and reload very nicely.
I bought mine from a guy on this forum. |

Those imperials are sweet!
Love the old scrolling, on the brass, on all of them!
Great score! |

The Upland hulls pictured are not compression formed Winchester hulls, they are straight wall plastic basewad hulls. I have several cases of them I bought years ago on close out, they make excellent steel shot loads if you want to go that route.
If somebody got boxes like that with compression formed hulls in them than the original hulls were replaced along the way, BTW those were the last 16 gauge Winchester loads made in the US till they shifted production to Winchester Australia. |

I have 2 flats of the same type box that are straight wall hulls also, but I have one flat that is in fact cf hulls! So this type box must have been used in a transition period for Winchester possibly ? |

Usually the last of the Compression formed 16 gauge hulls were either marked Expert or Super X Made in USA on the side panel, the two cases I have of the Upland loads have all been straight wall white plastic base hulls and say Made in USA also on the side panel.
Best way to find out is shoot a few and look the white plastic base wad, stands out real well. |

I agree with 16gawaterfowler, those are not CF hulls in those white boxes.
Some of my stash of CF. It has grown since this picture.
45 boxes or so in this picture.

Think what you will fella's I have over 10,000 cf hulls laying around so I know what they are and I have a flat that was factory sealed when I purchased them and they Are indeed compression formed hulls!! |
